Acupuncture Happy Hour occurs every Tuesday night at Atmananda Yoga Sequence. At each Acupuncture Happy Hour, we will provide free health evaluations, $20 auriculotherapy treatments & $40 pain management treatments. This event is a walk-in event but pre-registration is recommended. Health evaluations normally take about 15-20 minutes and acupuncture treatments only take about 30 minutes.
About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health care based on the theories of Traditional Oriental Medicine. It involves the strategic placement of needles at certain points of the body in order to restore Qi (pronounced “Chi”), which is often described as bodily life force or energy. Qi delivers vital energy and nutrients to different parts of the body along several meridian lines. Meridian lines form a network throughout the body and correspond to various internal organs. Good health is a state of balance between Qi and blood, body and mind, and among internal organs of the body. For those of you familiar with yoga, the concepts of vibrations along chakras are a good analogy for understanding Qi and meridians.
FREE Health Evaluations
Learn how to increase your Qi (vital energy) and achieve good health through acupuncture and herbs. During this mini one-on-one consultation, Danny Han will assess your general condition and provide advice on how you can maintain a pain-free, stress-free, and drug-free healthy lifestyle. (This evaluation is complimentary and there is no obligation to book a treatment.)
$20 Auriculotherapy (Ear Acupuncture)
Auriculotherapy involves the stimulation of the auricle, or outer ear, using acupuncture needles. Auriculotherapy is effecrive for treating alcohol/drug addiction, insomnia, migraines, and smoking cessation. It also detoxifies the body, relaxes muscles and promotes a general sense of well-being. Other than a slight tingling or warm sensation around the ear, there are almost no negative or serious side effects from this treatment. Instead, patients usually report additional positive side effects including an immediate sense of well-being and relief from insomnia.
$40 Pain Treatments
The majority of our patients seek acupuncture as a therapy to treat chronic pain and illness, which have either not been resolved through Western medicine or for which the individual seeks a natural, holistic and drug-free therapy. During Acupuncture Happy Hour nights, we are pleased to offer acupuncture treatments for pain relief for just $40 (normally $80 per session).
Prepare for Services
We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to roll up your sleeves or pant legs - needles may be placed at various parts of your entire body, depending on your condition and specific complaints. A tank top and yoga pants are ideal.
Please also avoid heavy meals and alcohol immediately before your treatment. Upon arrival, you will be required to complete a Patient Consent Form before receiving acupuncture services.

Combining his dual passions of photography and travel, Michael Yamashita has been National Geographics photographer in residence for 25 years in Asia. He has traveled the world and has developed a special affinity for fellow travelers. His most recent story subjects include Marco Polo and Zheng He. Following Marco Polos "The Description of the World" (1299), Yamashita trailed Polos footsteps from Venice to the Far East, capturing over 10,000 frames of the remaining wonders of what Polo described as a spectacularly wealthy, advanced, and prosperous other side of the world. And 100 years later, Ming Dynasty Admiral Zheng He made seven voyages that changed history. His enormous fleet of treasure ships returned to the Middle Kingdom from as far as East Africa with a knowledge of the customs and traditions of other civilization, proving that commence and international exchange could be accomplished without conquest or domination. Yamashita will be sharing his treasure trove of images captured from his epic journeys and showing why Marco Polo and Zheng He were both modern thinkers so far ahead of their times.

Yamashita has published many books on his various journeys across the globe, his photographic work is widely exhibited throughout the world, and his book "Marco Polo: A Photographers Journey" sold over 200,000 copies and was made into an award-winning documentary with National Geographic Channel. His work on Zheng He was made into a documentary feature, "Ghost Fleet," which won Best Historical Documentary at the New York International Film Festival. Michael also navigated each inch of the Great Wall with co-author William Lindesay; "The Great Wall, from Beginning to End?," their latest publication, was released in 2007.

In an age where financial turmoil, recession, and terrorism are overriding concerns, global poverty continues to be ignored. Yet the poorest half of the worlds population own less than one percent of its assets. Around one billion people subsist on under a dollar a day. The microfinance movement, which he founded, has lifted over 90 million families out of poverty across the globe.

Alex Counts will discuss his new book "Small Loans, Big Dreams," which tells the story of microfinance through the eyes of borrowers, lenders and leaders of microfinance. He will share his perspectives from the book as well as poignant anecdotes of individual micro-borrowers reminding us of the struggles the poor face to survive.

Alex Counts is President and CEO of the Grameen Foundation, a dynamic non-profit, Washington, DC-based organization that has grown into a global network of 46 microfinance partners in 25 countries. Counts has more than two decades' experience in microfinance and poverty reduction, starting as a Fulbright scholar at Grameen Bank, where he worked closely and trained under Professor Yunus. Counts became the Grameen Foundations first Executive Director in 1997 and the Foundation is helping an estimated 30 million people in Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the Arab world. Counts graduated from Cornell University in economics and is the author of numerous books and articles on poverty and microfinance including his latest, "Small Loans, Big Dreams: How Nobel Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus and Microfinance Are Changing the World." Amitav Ghosh's "Sea of Poppies," the first volume of the Ibis trilogy, is a spellbinding tale that involves a large cast of vivid characters who end up on a ship bound for Mauritius, an island off the coast of Africa. After Britain abolished slavery, Indians were tricked or forced onto ships to provide agricultural labor on plantations in Africa and the Caribbean. As their old family ties are washed away they, like their historical counterparts, come to view themselves as "jahaj-bhais," or ship-brothers. An unlikely dynasty is born, which will span continents, races, and generations.

A boy’s struggle with grief turns into a magical, musical journey for him, his family, and the teacher who tries to save him in the World Premiere production of "Song of Extinction" by E.M. Lewis.
Winner of the 2008 Ashland New Plays Festival, "Song of Extinction" is the story of Max Forrestal, a musically gifted high school student who is going to fail biology if he doesn't complete a 20-page paper on extinction by Tuesday. But Max's mother is dying of cancer, and school is the last thing on his mind. His biologist father, obsessed with saving a rare, threatened Bolivian insect, is incapable of dealing with his wife's impending death, or his son's distress. Max's teacher wants to offer him guidance; but helping his student pushes Khim Phan into a magical journey of his own - from the Cambodian fields of his youth into the undiscovered country beyond.
A meditation on the science of life and loss, the relationships between fathers and sons, Cambodian fields, Bolivian rainforests and redemption, the play integrates original music and elements of magical realism to weave its spell.
"Song of Extinction" runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm & 7pm, November 7 through December 14. Two low-priced previews take place on November 5 and 6. Single tickets are priced at $20 with a special price of $12 for full-time students with ID; previews are $5; and every Sunday at 7 pm is Pay-What-You-Can. US premiere

* * *

Still shrouded in controversy and mystery, the gripping story of Indian national hero "Netaji" Subhas Chandra Bose (played by Sachin Khedekar) gets an epic treatment from veteran director Shyam Benegal. In his telling of a dramatic story that has disappeared from public memory, Benegal draws a historical yet intimate portrait of the leader who diverged from the non-violent path of Gandhi (and who once remarked that he had two political sons, Jawaharlal Nehru and "that mischievous Netaji"). The film begins with Bose's dramatic escape and journey from Calcutta to meet with Adolf Hitler in Berlin and General Hideki Tojo in Tokyo. Benegal follows this astonishing life from Bose's controversial marriage to Austrian Emilie Shenckl, to his creation of India's first national army that battled the Allied forces in the jungles of Burma, until his mysterious death in 1945. Also featuring Rajit Kapur, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Rajeshwari Singh.

Discussion with Director Shyam Benegal will follow the screening.

He discusses the United Nations as an international bureaucracy, the socialization of international life by international law, and the ambiguous role of key democratic countries, which are at the same time the underwriters and under-miners of the international system. In addition, he outlines the context for UN leadership deliberations and decision-making, including those by the Secretary-General, in terms of both constraints and possibilities. East Asian democracies are in trouble, their legitimacy threatened by poor policy performance and undermined by nostalgia for the pro-growth, soft authoritarian regimes of the past. Yet citizens throughout the region value freedom, reject authoritarian alternatives, and believe in democracy. Yun-han Chu and Andrew J. Nathan, editors of "How East Asians View Democracy," will discuss the findings of a large-scale survey which presents a definitive account of the way in which East Asians understand their governments and their roles as citizens. The findings contradict the claim that democratic governance is incompatible with East Asian cultures but counsel against complacency toward the fate of democracy in the region. Please join us for this thought-provoking lunchtime discussion, which will be co-moderated by Orville Schell and Thomas Kellogg.

Yun-han Chu is distinguished research fellow at the Institute of Political Science of Academia Sinica and professor of political science at National Taiwan University. Andrew J. Nathan is the Class of 1919 Professor of Political Science at Columbia University. Thomas Kellogg is Program Officer and Advisor to the President at Open Society Institute. Orville Schell is the Arthur Ross Director of the Asia Society Center on US-China Relations.

In Conversation with:

Saeed Shafqat
Professor & Director, Centre for Public Policy & Governance (CPPG), Forman Christian University, Lahore, Pakistan

Presiding
Nicholas Platt
President Emeritus, Asia Society and Former Ambassador of the US to Pakistan

As this year winds downa year of enormous socio-political as well as economic turbulence for Pakistanwe take stock of what ordinary Pakistanis have had to endure and explore the implications of these upheavals for the future of the country. In the past year, Pakistanis lived through political assassinations, widespread political rallies and demonstrations, a state of emergency, the end of almost a decade-long military rule, transition to a shaky democratic coalition government, rising inflation and a slowing economy, the scourge of domestic terrorism and acrimonious diplomatic relations with its neighbors, to name a few. Is the upcoming year going to be different? How can the current leadership facilitate the countrys transition to a more stable, prosperous, and democratic Pakistan? Please join us to discuss these and other pertinent issues.

* * *

Policy programs at the Asia Society are generously supported by the Nicholas Platt Endowment for Public Policy.

Taiwan faces tough challenges over the next five years. It needs to innovate and evolve to retain its lead over fast-growing regional competitors. The new Kuomingtang-led administration brings the prospect of relative political stability. And with it comes the chance to restructure the economy and reform the banking sector. Government plans call for liberalisation, consolidation, and regulation to boost Taiwans competitiveness in international markets. New measures are proposed to attract increased inward investment. And over all hangs the key issue of Taiwans relationship with the mainland. Bringing together Taiwans business and political elites to debate the options and opportunities facing Taiwan, Economist Conferences is hosting the Business Roundtable with the Government of Taiwan.

For centuries in China, the social structure in single-surname villages was sustained by ritual and architecture. The architecture of ancestral halls, study halls, large houses and other buildings within the structured villages demonstrates vividly the local culture and aesthetics. Across southern China, architectural forms varied depending on terrain, local culture, building materials, craft traditions and life and economic patterns.

Professor Puay-Peng Ho will outline the rich pattern of the vernacular landscape in southern China and speak on the meaning of its architecture. In addition, Ms. Elizabeth Gill Lui, who has just published "Open Hearts Open Doors, Reflections on Chinas Past and Future," will share with us her experiences working in China. Her book has stunning images of traditional southern Chinese villages captured between 1995 and 2006 and illustrates how Chinas architectural vernacular environment is stuggling to survive amid tumultuous development.

Professor Ho is the Chair of the Department of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his diploma and M.A. in architecture from the University of Edinburgh, and his Ph.D. from the University of London.

Ms. Gill Lui is a photographer and author. She pursued graduate work in American Indian studies at the University of Denver and architectural photography at Harvard University. Ms. Gill Lui received a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council in 2005-6
to take part in an artist residency program at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. "Open Hearts Open Doors," her fourth publication, will be on sale after the presentation.

Corporate Luncheon

Speaker:
Takashi Anzai, President, Seven Bank Ltd.

Takashi Anzai has been through it all in Japanese banking. He began his career in central banking at the Bank of Japan, safe from the perils of insolvency faced by other commercial banks. In his final BOJ post as an executive director, he struggled to mitigate the turmoil caused by the Asian financial crisis and the Japanese credit crisis. He later served as president of the then-defunct Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan, and was involved in the government controlled restructuring of LTCB into what is now Shinsei Bank. Next, at the request of Seven & I Group, under which resides Japan’s largest retailer, Seven Eleven, he was charged with establishing and operating a completely new type of banking business – one operating primarily through a network of ATMs. After 5 years, the business erased initial cumulative losses, and in this, its 7th year, Seven Bank’s shares successfully listed on JASDAQ. Notwithstanding turbulence in the global financial markets wrought by the subprime loan problems, Seven Bank’s performance and share price have steadily improved. Seven Bank seeks the trust of its customers, and to instill confidence through its commitment to banking fundamentals.

Presider:
James Reed, President & Chief Executive Officer, Mizuho Securities USA Inc.; Director, Japan Society

Agenda
12-12:30 pm Registration & reception
12:30-1 Luncheon
1-2 Lecture and Q&A

Admission: Corporate members are entitled to a designated number of free admissions to this event, based on their company's current membership level.
Audiences are invited to stay after the 3 pm matinee, or to arrive early prior to the evening performance at 7 pm, for a Talk Back Series on Sundays at 5 pm. Each week, a different aspect of the play will be discussed.

Current open network innovation began at the computer networking and communication technology layers and has since moved up the "stack". Leading edge software, including Apache, Firefox and Linux has emerged from the "commons," and user-generated content such as Wikipedia is increasingly created by amateurs. Joichi Ito, former board member of ICANN and the Open Source Initiative and currently CEO of Creative Commons and board member of the Mozilla Foundation, speaks about the business and culture of the sharing economy and illustrates how Creative Commons will enable an explosion of innovation at the content and user community layer. A Luncheon Conversation with CLIVE PALMER, CEO & Chairman, Mineralogy Pty. Ltd.

* * *

In the early 1960s, China ran out of food, prompting then Premier Zhou Enlai to seek assistance from Australia. Without diplomatic relations with China but out of humanitarian concerns, the then-Australian Prime Minister asked a respected private citizen to bring food to Beijing. As a young boy Clive Palmer went along with his father. That started a lifelong love for China. Mr. Palmer retired before the age of 30 having made his fortune through real estate. He began to purchase iron ore and other mineral properties in Western Australia which, over the past few years, have risen in value exponentially. A superb storyteller, Mr. Palmer will share his life story as well as observations regarding China and the world.

A self-made billionaire, Mr. Palmer owns Mineralogy Pty Ltd., one of the worlds largest magnetite iron ore deposits, located in Western Australia and soon to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In the largest Chinese investment outside China, CITIC Pacific Ltd. will invest around US$8 billion in mine processing infrastructure costs at Mineralogy Pty Ltd. to facilitate the mining, processing and export of iron ore products. Mr. Palmer has established a US$100 million charity foundation for medical research and support of aboriginal communities in Western Australia. He has met and/or advised many top leaders, including President Putin of Russia, President Hu Jintao, and Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

Moderated by Ronnie C. Chan, Chairman, Asia Society Hong Kong Center.

Audiences are invited to stay after the 3 pm matinee, or to arrive early prior to the evening performance at 7 pm, for a Talk Back Series on Sundays at 5 pm. Each week, a different aspect of the play will be discussed.
