A boy’s struggle with grief turns into a magical, musical journey for him, his family, and the teacher who tries to save him in the World Premiere production of "Song of Extinction" by E.M. Lewis.
Winner of the 2008 Ashland New Plays Festival, "Song of Extinction" is the story of Max Forrestal, a musically gifted high school student who is going to fail biology if he doesn't complete a 20-page paper on extinction by Tuesday. But Max's mother is dying of cancer, and school is the last thing on his mind. His biologist father, obsessed with saving a rare, threatened Bolivian insect, is incapable of dealing with his wife's impending death, or his son's distress. Max's teacher wants to offer him guidance; but helping his student pushes Khim Phan into a magical journey of his own - from the Cambodian fields of his youth into the undiscovered country beyond.
A meditation on the science of life and loss, the relationships between fathers and sons, Cambodian fields, Bolivian rainforests and redemption, the play integrates original music and elements of magical realism to weave its spell.

Seven years into the Afghanistan Campaign, which started immediately following the September 11th attacks, the international effort to tackle the scourge of global terrorism remains inconclusive. It is now common knowledge that the resurgent Taliban and the remnants of the Al-Qaeda forces have exploited the inhospitable and ungovernable tribal areas along the Afghan-Pakistan border to carry out the attacks on both sides of the border. Consequently, this has caused a serious diplomatic rift between the two neighbors. Earlier this year, President Karzai threatened to send troops into Pakistan if cross-border attacks did not stop.

Is it realistically possible to secure the border? What would it take from Pakistan and Afghanistan to make this happen and what can the international community do to facilitate this? Should the NATO-led and ISAF forces change their strategies to address this problem?

Featuring Guy Klucevsek & Steve Gorn

The late Japanese American composer Teiji Ito (1935–82) was known as the founding composer of the experimental new music scene and for his scores for the avant-garde films by his former wife, Maya Deren. Creating an innovative combination of sounds, Ito had a diverse career composing music for stage and film, including the original Broadway production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Join novelist Amitav Ghosh ("The Glass Palace" and "The Hungry Tide") and scholar and cultural critic Kwame Anthony Appiah, Princeton University ("Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers"), for an insightful discussion on Ghosh's latest masterful historical epic, "Sea of Poppies," which brings together a diverse cast of Asians and Westerners--from a bankrupt raja to a widowed tribeswoman, from a mulatto American freedman to a free-spirited French orphan--as they are swept up into the all-devouring opium trade in early 19th-century India and China.

Already compared to Melville and Conrad, "Sea of Poppies" has been short-listed for the Booker Prize. Followed by a book signing and reception. Books available at AsiaStore (www.AsiaStore.org).

"One leaves this long page-turner wishing it could continue ... 'Sea of Poppies' is a tremendous novel." -- John Thieme, The Literary Review

* * *

Co-sponsored by The Dorothy and Lewis B.
