Let Their Success Be Your Inspiration Posted 11-30-2007
The mission of JANY is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. To do this, we place volunteers at elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the five boroughs and Long Island. Volunteers lead fun, hands-on activities with students that teach workforce readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship in a way students can understand and relate to. As role models, volunteers empower students to achieve their goals.
The time commitment for a JANY volunteer ranges from 5 class visits at 30-45 minutes each (elementary school) to 6-7 visits at 45 minutes each (middle and high school). Teachers are very appreciative of volunteers' efforts to reach out to their students, and will work with you to schedule times that are convenient for you. They will always be in the classroom to lend a helping hand during your lessons. Alternative models enable you to volunteer with JANY even with heavy travel or a difficult schedule. These models include JA one-day programming and company-based programming, in which the sessions are delivered to students in a more condensed fashion, rather than over time.
To ensure that your volunteer experience runs as smoothly as possible, all volunteers must attend one 90-minute training and orientation session. At this session, we will give you all of the tools and tips you need to be successful in your class. Via the link below, you will be able to sign up for a training & orientation session, as well as indicate your preferences for your volunteer experience.
The JANY team looks forward to working with you this year!

PHOTO Exhibition 2007 Posted 07-01-2007
The Chinatown Film Festival (www.cff2008.org), set to take place in October of 2008, is sponsoring a photo event inviting photographers from around the world to display their images of what they believe Chinatown is.
People have very different perceptions of what Chinatown is and we want to see those ideas in a photo.
The top 80 entries will be selected for an exhibition that will go up in New York City’s Chinatown.
The goal of the photo event is to try to get an understanding of what the Asian communities outside of Asia are like. We would like photographers of all ages to submit their most profound photograph.
The Chinatown Film Festival is also exhibiting many of the views of the Asian Cultures that is at many times misunderstood. The Chinatown Film Festival will hopefully bridge the cultures through the arts while having a great time doing so.
