"The transition from totalitarianism to freedom is never an easy one. Though in some ways obvious, that is still worth saying because sometimes we in the West are in danger of expecting too much too quickly. This does not mean that we should refrain from pressing for more - that is the prerogative of friends. But it does mean that we should be realistic.

In this book, President Nazarbayev tells the story of those years of transition and of his central part in the decisions which have shaped a new direction for Kazakhstan. And there is much to praise."

Off-Site Event

Speaker
Dr. Kazuo Inamori, founder & Chairman Emeritus, Kyocera Corporation; Honorary Advisor, KDDI Corporation; Principal, Seiwajuku

One of Japan's most dynamic and charismatic entrepreneurs, Dr. Kazuo Inamori's approach to success in business draws on the traditions of Japanese spirituality and a clear view of the qualities one needs to lead a good life. Dr. Inamori uses analogies from Buddhism to present a fresh way of looking at the entrepreneurial spirit that one need not be Buddhist in order to appreciate.

About Dr. Inamori
Dr. Inamori founded Kyocera Corporation in 1959, at age 27. Kyocera has since grown into a multinational high-tech giant, using fine ceramics technology to develop various products including semiconductor packages, electronic components and a wide range of industrial materials and components. In 1984, after Japan’s telecommunications industry was deregulated, Dr. Inamori established KDDI Corporation to reduce telephone costs for Japanese citizens. Today, the combined annual sales of these two companies, which he still heads, are US$50 billion. Using his own funds, he established the Inamori Foundation in 1984. A large endowment from the foundation backs the Kyoto Prizes, international awards that honor significant contributors to humanity in the fields of Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy.

Agenda
5:15 – 6:15 pm Registration
6:15 – 7:15 pm Lecture

This event is not at Japan Society.
Location:
New York Society for Ethical Culture
2 West 64th Street
New York, NY 10023

Admission
This is a free event. Corporate Luncheon Panel

There is no shortage of culprits to go around when searching for contributors to today’s mired U.S. financial markets, including lax regulators, conflicted credit agencies, and mortgage brokers and banks smitten with the rewards of securitization. Greed, the absence of due diligence and the notion that home values would forever rise have combined to strip the U.S. financial markets of much-needed liquidity and decades of trust. Comparisons of the current U.S. crisis to Japan’s 1990s post-bubble woes abound. Like Japan, initially mild forecasts in the U.S. have now turned darker. Many economists are citing a new wave of home foreclosures on the horizon that will lead to stagnant or negative growth, with rising unemployment and inflation well into 2009. Our experts discuss the root causes of the current financial market turmoil and offer comparative analysis of and lessons learned from Japan’s “lost-decade,” as well as assessments of the future of the U.S. and global economies.

Speakers:
Richard Katz, Editor-in-Chief, The Oriental Economist Report
Christopher Mayer, Senior Vice Dean and Paul Milstein Professor of Real Estate, Finance & Economics Division; Research Director, Paul Milstein Center for Real Estate, Columbia Business School
Ann Rutledge, Founding Principal, R&R Consulting

Moderator: Vincent Truglia, Managing Partner, Windy Hill Analysis LLC

Agenda
12-12:30 pm Registration & reception
12:30-1 Luncheon
1-2:30 Panel discussion

Admission: Corporate members are entitled to a designated number of free admissions to this event, based on their company's current membership level. This year is being defined by two singular events. One is the just-completed Summer Olympics, a spectacular coming-out party for China, signaling its arrival on the world stage. The other is the U.S Presidential election, which promises to transform the landscape of American politics as never before. Will the Olympics change China? How is the race for the White House looking for Barack Obama and John McCain? Will either candidate be able to lift the US economy and reassert Americas once pre-eminent role in world affairs?

Michael Elliott, Editor of TIME International, will address these issues of global importance as well as share his insights into the many world leaders he has met over the years, including, most recently, South Korean President Lee Myung Bak. Elliott is the Editor of TIME International and Deputy Managing Editor of TIME in the US, based in New York. An Oxford graduate, he joined TIME as editor-at-large in 2001 and prior to that spent 10 years at The Economist as political editor and Washington bureau chief, followed by seven years at Newsweek as editor of Newsweek International.

Moderated by Steve Marcopoto, President and Managing Director of Turner Broadcasting System, Asia Pacific (parent company of CNN news group).

All human civilizations depend on biology. From the foods and fuels that we eat and use, to the medicines and clothes that we take and wear. Recently, researchers have developed powerful new technologies that allow life to be built from scratch. New engineered organisms are being created to help cure cancer, produce renewable energy and assemble living computers. Teenagers can now learn to program DNA just like they learn to program computers. Who will control these new biotechnologies? What good and bad possibilities seem likely to come true? What role can Hong Kong play to shape and guide the development of these new tools?

Drew Endy is Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Bioengineering at Stanford University. He previously helped set up the Department of Biological Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He serves as President of the BioBricks Foundation, a not-for-profit organization promoting open access to biological technologies, and has co-founded two biotechnology companies. Esquire magazine recently named Endy one of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century. Endy gained his doctorate in biochemical engineering from Dartmouth College and carried out postdoctoral research at University of Texas and University of Wisconsin.

Please note: no jeans, sportwear, or sneakers

Acupuncture Happy Hour occurs every Tuesday night at Atmananda Yoga Sequence. At each Acupuncture Happy Hour, we will provide free health evaluations, $20 auriculotherapy treatments & $40 pain management treatments. This event is a walk-in event but pre-registration is recommended. Health evaluations normally take about 15-20 minutes and acupuncture treatments only take about 30 minutes.
About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health care based on the theories of Traditional Oriental Medicine. It involves the strategic placement of needles at certain points of the body in order to restore Qi (pronounced “Chi”), which is often described as bodily life force or energy. Qi delivers vital energy and nutrients to different parts of the body along several meridian lines. Meridian lines form a network throughout the body and correspond to various internal organs. Good health is a state of balance between Qi and blood, body and mind, and among internal organs of the body. For those of you familiar with yoga, the concepts of vibrations along chakras are a good analogy for understanding Qi and meridians.
FREE Health Evaluations
Learn how to increase your Qi (vital energy) and achieve good health through acupuncture and herbs. During this mini one-on-one consultation, Danny Han will assess your general condition and provide advice on how you can maintain a pain-free, stress-free, and drug-free healthy lifestyle. (This evaluation is complimentary and there is no obligation to book a treatment.)
$20 Auriculotherapy (Ear Acupuncture)
Auriculotherapy involves the stimulation of the auricle, or outer ear, using acupuncture needles. Auriculotherapy is effecrive for treating alcohol/drug addiction, insomnia, migraines, and smoking cessation. It also detoxifies the body, relaxes muscles and promotes a general sense of well-being. Other than a slight tingling or warm sensation around the ear, there are almost no negative or serious side effects from this treatment. Instead, patients usually report additional positive side effects including an immediate sense of well-being and relief from insomnia.
$40 Pain Treatments
The majority of our patients seek acupuncture as a therapy to treat chronic pain and illness, which have either not been resolved through Western medicine or for which the individual seeks a natural, holistic and drug-free therapy. During Acupuncture Happy Hour nights, we are pleased to offer acupuncture treatments for pain relief for just $40 (normally $80 per session).
Prepare for Services
We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to roll up your sleeves or pant legs - needles may be placed at various parts of your entire body, depending on your condition and specific complaints. A tank top and yoga pants are ideal.
Please also avoid heavy meals and alcohol immediately before your treatment. Upon arrival, you will be required to complete a Patient Consent Form before receiving acupuncture services.

Series on Asia Policy Options for the Next US Administration

By design or default, for nearly the past three decades, the US and Iran have pursued policies of hostility toward one another. The failure of these policies can be seen in the stalemate both governments have reached on virtually every issue; in the opportunities that have been missed to pursue common interests; and in the dangerous unpredictability of the future of the relationship. Change seems inevitable, but whether the change is in a positive or a negative direction remains to be determined.

Join us as the Asia Society brings together Frank G. Wisner, one of Americas most experienced diplomats, and renowned Iranian-American scholar Vali R. Nasr to explore the prospects for charting a new course in Americas troubled relationship with Iran.

Speakers:
Frank G. Wisner, Vice Chairman, External Affairs, American International Group; Former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy; Former US Ambassador to India, the Philippines and Egypt

Vali R. Nasr, Professor of International Politics, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University; Senior Fellow, Dubai Initiative, Harvard University; Adjunct Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies, Council on Foreign Relations

Please note: this event will be a live webcast from 8:30 to 9:30 am. Online listeners are encouraged to send questions to <moderator@asiasociety.org>.

* * *

Photo, right: ATTA KENARE/AFP/Getty Images

Hopkins
Chief Innovation Officer, Citi Foundation

The link between energy security and sustainable development is of growing importance in the Asia-Pacific region, where impressive economic growth has put corresponding strains on the environment while boosting a high demand for energy. What key factors are contributing to energy insecurity and threatening to derail progress to attaining sustainable development and the landmark Millennium Development Goals of 2000? What are the implications of the Asia-Pacific regions continued and deepening dependency on fossil fuels to meet its development goals, reduce poverty, and promote social inclusion?

Join us as the Asia Society and Citi Foundation present Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, who will discuss the need for a paradigm shift, one that will turn the vicious cycle of fossil fuel dependency, unsustainable growth, climate change and poverty, into a virtuous cycle, which focuses on growth, equitable distribution, and a focus on renewable and efficient energy, climate action, and energy security.

Heyzer is the first woman ever appointed to head ESCAP. She has received has received numerous international awards for her professional accomplishments and as a champion of womens rights, and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

As the largest financial shock since the Great Depression reverberates throughout the global economy, governments and financial institutions around the world has been scrambling to shore up capital markets and banks that make up the fabric of economies from Wall Street to Main Street. Dire prognosis of negative financial spiral into an extended recession is coupled with grim predictions of slow recovery. How will the global financial crisis impact Asia? Will Asia be a transitional terra firma for the West? Or will Asian economies buckle under the strain of the global downturn? Might this augur a new
shift in the balance of global economic power?

As Bhutan moves into the twenty-first century, the country is keenly aware of preserving its traditional national identity. Burt Todd first traveled to Bhutan in 1951. To show this countrys culture and natural beauty to the world, he created a series of innovative postage stamps. The installation presents photographs taken by the Todd/Stewart family juxtaposed with the elegant stamps and documents the way in which Bhutan has preserved its traditions and culture across generations.

* * *

Photo, right: The majestic fortress monastery of Punakha Dzong, first built in 1637, still looms large in the daily life of the people of Punakha, Bhutan. In Islamic culture, it is well known that calligraphy has retained its status as the quintessential art form, and that calligraphers have been among the most highly esteemed artists. "The first thing created by God was the pen," according to a Qur'anic dictum, and the practice of calligraphy constituted an expression of piety. Acquiring skill in beautiful writing was an exercise that expanded into another range of values. Calligraphy became a hallmark of high culture, a trace of its maker.

Co-curator Mary McWilliams of the Arthur M. When George Bush took office in 2001, North Koreas nuclear program was frozen. Seven years later, it became the worlds eighth fully-fledged nuclear power. "Meltdown: The Inside Story of the North Korean Nuclear Crisis" gives a detailed account of one of the most important foreign-policy failures of the Bush administration which resulted in an extended volatile foreign policy crisis for the US. How did the US fail to prevent North Korea from acquiring nuclear weapons? What led North Korea to eventually abandon its nuclear program? What will the post-Kim era look like and who will fill the power vacuum?

Mike Chinoy is the Edgerton Senior Fellow for Asia at the Pacific Council on International Policy, focusing on security issues in North Korea, China, and Northeast Asia. Prior to that, he was CNNs Senior Asia correspondent, having reported on the most important events in the region for almost 30 years. Chinoy has covered North Korea extensively and visited the country 14 times. In April 1994, he became the first broadcaster to file live TV reports from North Korea, and was the only journalist to travel with former US President Jimmy Carter on his historic trip to Pyongyang in June of that year. Chinoy received Emmy,
Peabody, and Dupont Awards for his coverage of China's Tiananmen Square crisis in 1989 and a Dupont Award for his coverage of the 2004 Asian tsunami. He holds a BA degree
from Yale University and a Masters degree from Columbia University.

Copies of "Meltdown" will be available for sale after the luncheon.

With three consecutive terms of strong domestic leadership, forceful economic reform measures and coherent, if controversial, foreign policies, Junichiro Koizumi looked to reverse a troubling trend of short-lived, inspirationally-deficient leaders. The swift departures of Shinzo Abe and Yasuo Fukuda in the past year alone, however, suggest a return to the revolving door premierships of the past. Japan's sputtering economy and strained East Asian relations offer no shortage of potential political and economic challenges for the next Japanese administration, but lawmakers and businesspeople at home and diplomats abroad might well wonder who is at the helm of the world’s second largest economy and whether it really matters. Our panels of policy and business experts discuss what can be done to restore domestic and international confidence in Japan’s ability to lead and, in the absence of leadership, whether the world needs and expects a politically potent Japan.

Agenda:
6-6:30 Registration
6:30-8 Panel discussion and Q&A
8-8:30 Reception

Admission: Corporate members are entitled to a designated number of free admissions to this event, based on their company's current membership level. Throughout much of Pakistan's history the government has been dominated by the Pakistan Army. However, early this year a civilian government was elected, President (and retired General) Pervez Musharraf resigned, and a civilian President, Asif Zardari, was elected in his stead. Meanwhile, Pakistan has been wracked with an increasingly virulent insurgency and an economy on the brink of failure. In recent months Pakistan has suffered a major terrorist bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad and has accelerated its military efforts against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces operating in the Tribal Areas along the Afghan border. The new government is also facing pressure from the US to step up its activities against terrorism. In this environment, how will the new civilian government and the military establishment work together to solve Pakistan's problems?

My Beijing Birthday is a documentary that takes a heart-felt and humorous look at the rapidly changing lives of a group of young Beijingers through the eyes of an American, Howie Snyder. Howie studied Chinese stand-up comedy in Beijing with a group of 8-year-olds in 1996. 12 years later, he visited the group again, as they reflected on their lives and their new dreams for the future. This generation of children, known as Chinas new little emperors, is the first in the world to grow up without brothers and sisters. They have grown up amid the most rapid economic growth the world has ever seen. My Beijing Birthday breaks through language and cultural barriers to show us how these children and Beijingers in general are a lot like Howies native New Yorkers: rough on the outside, but tender on the inside.

Howie Snyder has spent the last 25 years living in China, Japan, and other Asian countries. He worked for Citibank in Tokyo in the mid 80s and Kroll Associates in Tokyo and Hong Kong through most of the 90s. He was Project Manager for Coca-Cola Company at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Howie Snyder received his MA in International Economics and Japan Studies from Johns Hopkins and his Bachelors degree in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University.

* * *

The Asia Society and Ying E Chi are screening a series of 4 films about China, including "My Beijing Birthday," in October and November 2008. Asia Society members may enjoy package discounts for the screenings of "Umbrella" and "Useless." Further information is available on www.thegrandcinema.com.hk.
