While "social enterprise" is a wide-ranging umbrella term, their goal is universal: individuals with innovative solutions to tackle societys most pressing social problems by offering new ideas for widespread change. They are role models proving that individuals who channel passion into action can do almost anything. We have brought together a panel of outstanding agents of change to speak about why they chose their cause, their vision, and the challenges they face.

Dr. Mahdav Chavans mission is He wants every Indian to learn to read." In 1994, he founded Pratham, which currently operates in over 400,000 villages and 43 cities throughout India, increasing literacy among poor children. Within the last decade, Pratham has reached over one million children and is a beacon of hope in India, where half the children cannot read or write properly. (http://www.pratham.org)

After decades as a successful businessman, Jack Sim observed that the lack of adequate sanitation facilities accounted for much of the worlds social and health problems. In 2001, he set up the Singapore-based World Toilet Organization (WTO),
which strives to provide clean toilets for the estimated 2.6 billion people who lack access. Since its inception, WTO has organized 7 World Toilet Summits. Today, WTO has 126 organizations in 49 countries. Jack has won many awards for his advocacy work. (http://www.worldtoilet.org)

Marie So is the co-founder of Ventures in Development, a non-profit organization that seeks to incubate and launch social enterprise ventures. She helped launch Mei Xiang Yak Cheese, a social enterprise that produces yak cheese for export, providing a steady source of income to Yunnan herding communities. In fact, NASA has been researching silk braiding in attempts to develop applications for spacecraft. In this program, leading kumihimo artist Makiko Tada and Hiroyuki Hamada, Professor at Kyoto Institute of Technology, explore the artistry of kumihimo and how ancient craftsmanship is being applied to new technologies.
Yang Ban Xi were model plays created under the leadership of Maos wife Jiang Qing as part of the Cultural Revolutions propaganda machine. Stunning Beijing opera motives, virtuosic ballet sequences, and Western orchestral music combine to create spectacles to glorify peasants, soldiers, and the Party. During the Revolution, audiences could only see these plays, and their vividly-colored widescreen film adaptations, in theaters. This documentary includes footage of these sensational films as well as interviews with stars made famous by them. The memory of the Yang Ban Xi brings forth both distress and a sense of nostalgia.

Absorbing, shrewdly intelligent. The New York Times
Corporate Luncheon Panel
The global credit crisis and sub-prime mortgage market woes have resulted in slowed growth – even recession by some definitions - in the U.S. and other developed nations. In contrast to past recessions in 1990 and 2001, the current period is characterized by markedly inflated prices for commodities, raising the specter of stagflation, not seen in the U.S. since the 1970s. While the root of the current global economic downturn may lie in the U.S.’s deflated housing market, Japan faces a similarly bleak forecast – rising prices for energy, raw materials and food, accompanied by slow or even negative growth. While the developed world may see improved economic growth and commodities conservation efforts, as long as emerging economies like China and India continue rapid industrialization, commodity prices will continue to rise. Our panel examines the relationship between growth in the developing world and skyrocketing commodities prices and assesses policy options for the world’s two largest economies to combat rising prices.

Speakers
Lewis Alexander, Chief Economist, Citi
Brad Setser, Fellow for Geoeconomics, Council on Foreign Relations
Hiroyuki Tarumi, Executive Vice President, Mitsubishi International Corporation

Moderator
Jennifer Ablan, Senior Investment Correspondent, Reuters, LLC

Agenda
12:00-12:30 pm Registration & reception
12:30-1:00 Luncheon
1:00-2:30 Panel discussion

Admission
Corporate members are entitled to a designated number of free admissions to this event, based on their company's current membership level. Cambodians believe that the very blessed or lucky have "golden bones," says author Sichan Siv. The Cambodian-born US Ambassador to the UN recounts his extraordinary 1976 escape from ten brutal months in a Khmer Rouge forced labor camp, his resettlement as a refugee in Wallingford, Connecticut, his selection as the first Asian-American deputy assistant to the President of the United States, and his appointment as a US Ambassador to the UN Economic and Social Council.

Now a "Cambodian cowboy" living on a ranch near San Antonio with his American-born wife, Siv avoids bitterness but hopes people will find in his book the ability to adapt and to adopt. And to know that with hard work, anyone can make the most impossible dreams come true.

Only in the past few decades has there been a clearly-defined language policy in China. When the Republic of China moved its capital to Nanjing in 1930, the government formally adopted the Beijing dialect to be the national standard along with simplified characters. However, while the Beijing pronunciation was quickly accepted, simplified characters were met with strong resistance. Standard Chinese, as we know it today, was only successful around the time of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Why was the introduction of a standard language such a laborious process? What were some of the debates among Chinese people during the first half of the 20th century before choosing its national standard? While the mainland and Singapore have adopted simplified characters as standard orthography, complex characters continue to be the normin Hong Kong and Taiwan. What is the importance of standard Chinese and English in China, Taiwan, and also Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese sovereignty at a time when China was emerging as a major geo-political power?

Professor Sun Chaofen is the Chair of the Department of Asian Languages and Director of the Center for East Asian Studies at Stanford University. Prior to that, he taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has written many books, including Chinese: A Linguistic Introduction and Studies on the History of Chinese Syntax and Word Order.
