Hello Everyone,

It is that time of year again for VBS (vacation bible school) at the Korean Presbyterian Church in Hopkinton, MA. This year's theme is Power Lab http://mastersloft.com
It is a science based program that looks really intriguing. The Elementary program is done completely in English. I am not sure how they are going to handle it in the preschool session
as most of the parents are more comfortable speaking in Korean but the
Power Lab program in only in English.

This is such a wonderful opportunity for our children to be in a
welcoming community of their Korean peers. The counselors are parents
and members of the church's youth group. What an opportunity to have
your child in a place where they look the same as everyone else around
them!

Power Lab VBS

Elementary - children entering into grades 1 through 5
August 5th thru 8th (Tues - Fri)
10am to 2pm

CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) Presents An Evening of Dance, Theatre, and Film Adaptations of the Short Stories of Donald Barthelme by

Yoshiko Chuma

Nathan Dame

Jonathan Hayes

Shirotama Hitsujiya

Harold Lehmann

CRS presents a rare staging of the work Donald Barthelme, father of postmodern fiction, by an appropriately eclectic array of dance, theatre, and film artists including multiple Bessie Award winner Yoshiko Chuma and Yubiwa Hotel artistic director Shirotama Hitsujiya (one of "The World's 100 Most Influential Japanese Women," Newsweek Japan). Also on the program are works by experimental theatre directors Nathan Dame and Harold Lehmann, and making its NYC premiere is Jonathan Hayes' short film "The School" (2003 Worldwide Short Film Festival Audience Award and Sundance Film Festival 2004), adapted from the Barthelme story of the same title. Lighting design is by Poe.

General Admission $20
Students/Seniors/CRS Members $10

"Yoshiko Chuma is a maverick, utterly unique, a 'one-off' as the British say, on the stage of world dance. Her career has spanned almost 30 years and 35 countries. Her work is a mixture of play and seriousness, anarchy and reflection, and her hallmarks are collaboration and cultural exchange. Chuma cuts across categories. One might call her a postmodern choreographer, a movement designer, or a visual artist whose primary medium is human beings—dancers, musicians, pedestrians. She is unusually alive to space and landscape, indoors or outdoors. Gifted with great personal force and intelligence, at heart she is an experimentalist, a fierce explorer with a profound sense of structure." — Amanda Smith, Dance Magazine, 2007

Yoshiko Chuma

Nathan Dame

Jonathan Hayes

Shirotama Hitsujiya

Featured Artists
Barbara Coleman: "My work is influenced by many sources. Among them is de Kooning, Joan Mitchell, contemporary Japanese art, Tantra art, art from India, and the American Marvel Comics Group."

Cecile Chong: "I use encaustic on wood panels to create cross-culture narratives. I juxtapose appropriate images from vintage children's books and other found images to address the process of cultural assimilation and the development of individual identity."

Dana Zaldo: "I want to represent this Mexican American "consciousness" as a synthesis of the old world and the new, the conquerors and the conquered, the mystical and the rational, with a tolerance for ambiguity."

Kikuko Tanaka: "My work creates a series, which interact with each other for its interpretation. My work are psychological examination of the self, critiques of the socio-political construction of contemporary culture and reference to art history. For all the aspects of my work, my being Japanese in a foreign land takes crucial role."

Ugur Kunst: "My work is a reflection of my life and things around me which comments on the cultural, political and environmental issues that surround us."

The results in both the Democratic and Republican primaries defied expectations. Senator John McCain, with a campaign team in disarray, was written off by virtually all pundits at the start of the season. After a bruising battle, Senator Barack Obama emerged as the victorious nominee, defeating Senator Hillary Clinton. What happened along the campaign trail? Do the results shed any light on the upcoming campaign for the general election? What do the results say about the campaign process, the candidates, the mood of the American people and what they want from their leaders? As the two candidates prepare for the party conventions that take place in August and September, we have brought together two highly-respected political commentators to answers these questions and much more about the race to the White House. Both journalists have followed the election and candidates closely, bringing knowledge, understanding and perspective about this very important presidential race.

This year, three diverse spaces will be enlivened: the Festival will return to Chase Plaza and The Lawn at Battery Park, its homes for the past five years, and will cross the harbor for the first time with performances on Governors Island.

Battery Dance Company has added another innovation this year by partnering with the Indo-American Arts Council to present two days of South Asian dance during the Downtown Dance Festival’s residency at Chase Plaza. In view of the response last year, Battery Dance Company will reprieve its Everybody Dance NOW! program, in which the audience is invited on stage to learn a segment from one of the pieces they’ve just watched.

The subprime crisis in the United States is taking a heavy toll on consumer confidence in the world's largest economy. To compound the problem, loose monetary policy in reaction to liquidity fears has been helping drive down the US dollar and jacking up the price of oil. It is this in particular that is delivering multiple challenges to Asian economies: lower demand for Asian manufactures, increases in food prices, and increasingly, the winding down of the trend of globalization. As the cost of trans-oceanic transportation rises, the benefits of offshoring are fast eroding. An Asia that has grown on the back of American demand for goods may find the subprime crisis the start of a new era in global economics--one that threatens the assumptions of growth and increasing prosperity in the past three decades.<br />

Tion Kwa is an editorial writer and op-ed writer on foreign affairs, business, and economics at the Straits Times in Singapore. He is currently a Bernard Schwartz Fellow of the Asia Society in Washington, where his work focuses on trade issues between US and Asia as well as regional security. He has appeared in CNN, CNBC, and BBC.
