A workshop on writing drawn from real life, but employing the techniques of poetry and fiction. Writing from life can be a tricky business. There are people to protect, faulty memories of events, and the pitfalls of self-censorship and self-aggrandizement. This is where creative non-fiction comes in. It's a form of writing that is drawn from real life, but employs techniques of poetry and fiction. Creative nonfiction recognizes that our lives are too rich not to write about, but that our imaginations are too strong to ignore. In this class, we will write by drawing on memory, family myth, and the truth and lies of our lives. We will cover literary techniques such as character, dialogue, setting and story arc, as well as performance.

Bushra Rehman is the author of a collection of poetry, Marianna's Beauty Salon (Colorlines Magazine, 2006), and one of the editors of Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today's Feminism (Seal Press, 2002). Bushra has been featured in NY Newsday and her work has appeared in Colorlines, Curve, SAMAR, Bottomfish, and is forthcoming in Writing the Lines of Our Hands: An Anthology of South Asian-American Poetry. She performs her work around the country.

Cost is $175/$150 for members.

“Visuals are breathtaking, but so is the loss of emotional control on display, by what are otherwise, probably, very rational people.”
-Variety

2008, 123 min., format TBD. Directed by Li Ying. NY Premiere.

Winner of the Hong Kong Film Festival.
Thousands of people pour into Yasukuni Shrine each year on August 15, where the war dead, including WW II war criminals, are enshrined. In this documentary shot over the course of 10 years, director Li Ying tirelessly chronicles those who visit the Shrine from various backgrounds and perspectives--patriotic veterans, extreme nationalists and angry protesters from China and Korea. Ying, born in China and based in Japan, dares to tackle this controversial subject as he interviews a man who made holy Yasukuni swords during WW II. The film juxtaposes the man's hesitancy to speak about Yasukuni with the chaos and rage that mount at the Shrine every year. Many theaters in Japan canceled the initial engagements of this film, causing a huge controversy on self-censorship through fear of right-wing interventions.

Peter Schindler loves driving. He came up with the wild idea to drive 21,000km, from the mouths to the sources of both the Yangtze and the Yellow River. On May 9, 2007, Peter took off on this epic 100-day road trip through China not in a standard S.U.V. or a Humvee, but in an open-top two-seater roadster, a yellow Caterham he named Miss Daisy. With his sponsors latest camera phone and assistance from photographer Ron Yue, he came back with a treasure trove of stories and images about China. Peter will be sharing his collection of spectacular photos, dotted with observations about modern Chinas countless contradictions - horribly polluted in places yet still possessing the most beautiful landscapes on earth; fond of showing off its new riches yet still so miserably poor; uniform in creed yet surprisingly multi-cultural. (After completing its journey, Miss Daisy was auctioned off for charity.)

Peter Schindler studied I.T. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and business at INSEAD. He was previously associate partner in Accenture's China practice, living there for twenty years as an IT and management consultant, writer, and adventurer. He has also raced Formula 2, 3, Super-V, and Renault Elf in Europe. In 2005, he published "On the Road - Driving Adventures, Pleasures, and Discoveries" and continues to write a blog about his driving journeys in China.

Poetry, calligraphy, and painting have been virtues to literati throughout the Korean history and are pursued by modern artists to this day. At the exhibition, one can experience both traditional and contemporary Korean paintings. Some artists merged the traditional theme and style with contemporary vision and technique, giving a new twist to the paintings. Others retained the tradition, especially in the aspects of portraying nature and expressing their feelings and thoughts spontaneously. Among the seven artists, Kwon is the only artist who focuses on the calligraphy and will be showing Hangul (Korean alphabet) calligraphy in various styles and themes at the exhibition.

Japan's 'bubble economy' burst in 1990, and only started to recover in 2002 - thanks in large part to major economic structural reforms introduced by then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Since Mr. Koizumi's retirement in 2006, however, Japan's reform momentum has stalled - and in some cases, reversed - and there are now serious concerns surfacing about the country's future. What would it take to truly reform Japan's economy? Why did Mr. Koizumi's reforms work? What are the biggest economic challenges facing Japan today? How will these challenges affect Japan's relationship with China, and how might this relationship take shape over the next decade?

Professor Heizo Takenaka served in a number of ministerial positions in Mr. Koizumi's Cabinet. Among other things, he served as Minister for Economic and Fiscal Policy, spearheading economic changes that included the disposal of non-performing loans held by Japanese banks and the privatization of Japan Post, the nation's biggest public enterprise. Professor Takenaka is Director of the Global Security Research Institute at Keio University. He returned to academia after Mr. Koizumi's resignation in 2006. Professor Takenaka began his academic career as a visiting scholar at Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. in economics at Hitotsubashi University and his Ph.D. from Osaka University. Professor Takenaka is the author of numerous books, including "The True Story of Japan's Structural Reform." He sits on several advisory boards and committees and was named to the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum in 2007.

Philip P. Pans new book takes us inside the dramatic battle for Chinas soul and into the lives of individuals struggling to come to terms with their nations pastthe turmoil and trauma of Maos ruleand to take control of its future. Capitalism has brought prosperity and global respect to China, but less in the way of political reform. From the rusting factories in the industrial northeast to a tabloid newsroom in the booming south, from a small-town courtroom to the plush offices of the nations wealthiest tycoons, he tells the gripping stories of ordinary men and women fighting for political change. "Out of Maos Shadow" offers a startling new perspective on China, challenging the conventional wisdom that free markets automatically lead to free societies.
Two Truths and a Lie: Writing Creative Non-fiction with Bushra Rehman

Friends,

The Organization of Chinese Americans had their national convention in Sacramento last year. The OCA leadership reached out to FCC to attend, and we were warmly welcomed; they even set aside a room for FCC leaders to meet, and helped us put together a panel on race, adoption and identity for FCC and OCA chapter leaders, which was a fabulous interactive experience I will never forget.

I hope you strongly consider attending. They have fabulous speakers, workshops, and it is a great opportunity to network. There are lots of free

activities for kids and teens.

For those of you who have editors who received our recent FCC Northern California newsletter, there were two lovely articles related to the OCA convention, one by Jeri Floyd, FCC Southern California on the value of building bridges to the Chinese American community, and the other by Peggy Scott, our FCC Northern CA President on her experience at the OCA convention.

If you want assistance in getting together with other FCC leaders and OCA chapter presidents, contact Michael Lin (above) at OCA. I hope you have as informative and memorable experience as we had.

Best wishes,

Allison Branscombe

Past President
