Soy sauce has long become "liquid salt," a standard seasoning ingredient in kitchens these days. More chefs are becoming educated about the huge array of Asian flavors that are now so readily available from markets across the country. Many are pushing the envelope, determined to tease the palates with new flavor sensations by playing with more exotic Asian sauces - from curry-flavored laksa to nutty aromatic sesame oil, the versatile satay sauce, spicy chili sauce, and even nouc nam (fish sauce). This is a program devoted to understanding the growing popularity of Asian sauces in America and to explore which ones are commonly found in pantry. We will also explore how Americans are creating new applications for them.

This movie is sponsored by the Pacific Film Archive--Advance Tickets: (510) 642-5249 Johnnie To, Wai Ka-fai (Hong Kong/China, 2003, 93 mins)
One of the greatest action directors working in the world . . . (Johnnie) To has built a dazzling brilliant career out of cinematic mayhem.”—Manohla Dargis, New York Times
If there’s one name that has kept Hong Kong cinema alive from its post-handover hangover to today, it’s Johnnie To. From motormouthed comedies to romantic melodramas, gangster shoot-em-ups to bizarre fantasies, To has made nearly fifty films in his illustrious career, often at a rate of three or four a year. If this were the sixties, Cahiers du cinéma would have put his name up there with Hawks, Mann, or Walsh; he’s living proof that the best genre films are now made in Hong Kong.
This small sampling of To’s work concentrates on his post-1997 films, created after forming his own production company, Milkyway Image, which gave him the freedom and economic security to mix commercial works with more out-there experiments. Hollywood noirs reimagined in nocturnal, neon-lit, mega-capitalist Hong Kong, gritty gangster films like The Mission and Election boast a self-assured command of machismo and male bonding, a wry sense of humor, and a steady, deadpan cast that could out-macho Robert Mitchum. Also featured are a few of To’s over-the-top cinema fantasies like Fulltime Killer and Running on Karma (codirected by Wai Ka-fai), works that unchain genre filmmaking from the tethers of reality and showcase a talent willing not just to tweak the rules, but to break them entirely.
Andy Lau is a Buddhist monk turned male stripper who can see past lives and predict the future in To’s crazed superhero genre mash-up. Like Spider-Man rewritten by the Dalai Lama.

The Zhang San Feng Festival (pronounced "Jong Sahn Fung") is named for a 16th century Taoist master, Zhang San Feng, often credited as the founder of tai chi. This convention brings together many of the top instructors in the field to offer nearly 60 "hands on" workshops over the course of three-plus days. This year's Festival is scheduled from Thursday evening (opening ceremonies) June 5 - Sunday June 8, 2008, at Fallsview Resort and Spa in the Catskills region of New York.
Festival topics range from the healing to the martial aspects of tai chi and the related Chinese arts, qigong, Traditional Chinese Medicine, lectures on Taoist and Buddhist philosophy, and more. Sprinkled among the Chinese arts is an eclectic mix of "off topic" subjects designed to keep things fun and lively. At the center of the activities is the Dao of Health Expo, a vending area offering a fascinating mix of books, DVD's, Chinese clothing and rare products, custom-made calligraphy and more.
Each day begins with morning qigong and meditation classes before breakfast, and ends with entertainment each night, from keynote speakers to drumming circles to kungfu movies in the resort movie lounge. The Festival ends on Sunday with a master's Q&A roundtable discussion, raffle giveaways and a Taoist incense ceremony designed to send everyone home with a smile on their lips and peace in their hearts.

One illegal immigrant. One smuggling debt. One day to pay up.
Variety calls Take Out "a deeply affecting portrayal of struggling immigrants in Gotham" and "beautiful in unexpected ways". This truly indie film represents all of the buzz and cutting-edge potential associated with today's extreme micro-budget independent guerilla filmmaking. Filmmakers Shih-Ching Tsou and Sean Baker, who between them wrote, directed, produced, shot and edited the film, have been winning awards and receiving glowing reviews wherever the film has screened. The filmmakers will be available for Q&A after select screenings at the QUAD Cinema beginning June 6th 2008.
"Take Out" is the story of a young Chinese immigrant who rides silently through the dark rain soaked streets of Manhattan and comes face to face with countless apartment dwellers who simply see him as an anonymous and faceless delivery boy. Yet inside this quiet and nameless man burns an intense conflict from which there may be no escape.

China, once known as a center of cheap, unskilled labor and low-cost manufacturing, is emerging as a R&D super-center, quickly advancing up the technology ladder.
This underreported shift is old news to technology financiers and entrepreneurs. Many have already relocated to China, positioning themselves to ride the high technology wave that’s lifting the country’s economy.
Backed by western financing, China’s entrepreneurial spirit is gaining momentum and global recognition. Is their gain a U.S. loss?
Please join prominent figures from the technology and financial communities with extensive experience in both the United States and China as they discuss China’s emergence as a R&D powerhouse.

Interaction and Identity in a New York Asian Cram School

Typically viewed as a staple of childhood life in East Asia, cram schools are private educational institutions offering additional academic instruction during non-school hours. Over the past few decades, hundreds if not thousands of Asian American-run cram schools have been established throughout the United States, proliferating across urban areas particularly in Asian American enclaves. Despite this recent boom of Asian American cram schools, there has been very little research that examines how these educational sites affect the academic and identity development of youth. This paper draws on ethnographic data collected over a period of one year in a fifth grade English language arts class in a Korean American-run cram school in Queens. I examine how social relationships emerge among participants and how participants come to socially identify one another. I explore the ways in which these phenomena relate to learning and identity in the classroom. Methods of data collection include participant observation, fieldnotes, audio-recorded interviews with teachers, students and administrators, and video-recorded classroom interaction. Central to this investigation is the analysis of social interaction.

Light refreshments are served. Please register at least a week in advance so that we may anticipate the number of guests to accommodate.
The Friday Evening Lecture Series provides an opportunity for intellectuals and scholars, to talk about their current research or activities on topics that are of interest to the Asian American community. Not only will they be presenting before a live audience, but they will also be presenting before an online audience, via the Internet through webcasting, allowing them the potential to present to the world as well.
For our live online audience, we offer the ability to participate, ask questions and share comments during the Q&A sessions of our lectures, either by sending an instant messaging (AIM) or calling through a peer-to-peer voice service (Skype).
Yet, the excitement doesn't stop there, because each lecture is also simultaneously videotaped, which is then uploaded as streaming video, and can be viewed by anyone who visits our website, along with notes, pictures and from the evening. In addition to our streaming videos, you are now able to listen to podcasts of our lectures, and download them for listening on the go to an iPod, or any other mp3 enabled music device.

In this movie, Aaron Kwon seeks judo guidance from ex-champion, now-drunkard Louis Koo in To’s sweet-natured remake of Kurosawa’s Sanshiro Sugata. “The absolute best neo-samurai judo farce in town.”—Village Voice
“One of the greatest action directors working in the world . .

This year's annual Korea IT Network (KINCON) conference brings together innovative professionals, industry leaders, government officials and academics to discuss the convergence of technology and consumers. Today, the advance in technology is accelerating and the consumers are taking advantages. Whether using latest devices or visiting the newest social networking web site, consumers are shaping the future of technology trend.
The greatest example of technology and consumer convergence exists today in only one place: South Korea. A true convergence of broadband internet, multiplayer gaming, 3G cell phones, digital TV, virtual worlds, electronic cash, robotics, the intelligent home and e-government exists currently, ahead of most of the world, including the United States. It is the most connected country with highest penetration of broadband, 3G cell phones, digital TV and multiplayer video gaming. The world leader in practically every aspect of the information society, South Korea is the world's first true leader in consumer technology. The first country to launch digital TV broadcasts to cell phones and cars, and where 100% of cell phones sold are camera phones and nearly three out of four cell phones are a high speed 3G phone. The country where over half pay using the cell phone, 43% of the nation maintains personal profiles and blogs, and 25% of the whole population have participated in video gaming inside the same game.
At KINCON 2008 – Consumer and technology convergence, we will seek answers and observe trends emerging from an “always-on” viewpoint in one of the most digitally demanding audiences in the world and how that will shape the future of the Internet. With the help of digital innovation and rapid development of the internet, the boundaries between industries and walls between digital devices are also collapsing. In this ubiquitous environment, services that can connect the users’ life seamlessly, regardless of time, space, and device, will play a crucial part in society and business.

In his latest book, Bill Emmott, the former editor in chief of the Economist, takes on the growing rivalry among China, India, and Japan—and what it means for America, the global economy, and the twenty-first century. Emmott argues, against conventional wisdom, that these three Asian powers are closely intertwined by their fierce competition for influence, markets, and resources. "Rivals" explains and explores the ways in which these sometimes bitter rivalries will play out over the next decade.

"No story matters till it is finished and the only stories that need telling are the ones whose endings do not fulfill us," writes Fae Myenne Ng in "Steer Toward Rock" (Hyperion, 2008). "Steer" is the eagerly-awaited follow-up to Ng's first novel "Bone" (Hyperion 1993), a classic of Asian American literature -- and not since "Bone" has a work so eloquently revealed the complex loyalties of Chinese America. Set in a McCarthy-era San Francisco, "Steer Toward Rock" is the story of a man who chooses love over the law, illuminating relationships that are complicated by the process of immigration.
Ng will read and discuss her work with Will Schwalbe, a board member of The Asian American Writers' Workshop. A first generation Chinese-American, Fae Myenne Ng was born in San Francisco. In her bestselling and critically praised debut, "Bone," Ng uncovered the hopes and grief a Chinatown family, aided by her "poet's gift for metaphor and... reporter's eye for detail" (Michiko Kakatuni, The New York Times). Ng is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Pushcart Prize and awards from the NEA, the Lannan Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Novelist Maxine Hong Kingston called "Steer Toward Rock" "a tale about illegal aliens from China, told with their own images, idioms, and axioms—and charming humor."

As human rights emerge as a central concern around the 2008 Beijing Olympics, "CHINA’S GREAT LEAP – The Beijing Games and Olympian Human Rights Challenges" examines China in transition today. When Beijing first sought to host the Olympics, China was still recovering from the upheavals of Maoist rule and adapting to a market revolution. How are China’s leaders managing the Olympic process and the internal and external pressures for reform the Games are creating?
"China’s Great Leap" illuminates China’s recent history through voices of leading China experts, and points to key areas for future reform. Join the book's editor, Minky Worden, and contributing writers Scott Greathead and Emily Parker for an evening of discussion, moderated by Jamie Metzl, Executive Vice President of the Asia Society.

Education is the responsibility of the government. But what happens when governments do not deliver? In 2005, the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), a survey of children’s learning levels facilitated by Pratham, India’s largest non-profit in the area of primary education, revealed that although more than 94% of children were enrolled in school, learning levels were low.
In 2007 Pratham launched the Read India movement with the ambitious goal of teaching all children in India how to read, write and do arithmetic by 2009. Pratham has today mobilized volunteers in almost 300,000 villages across India and has formed partnerships with over 15 state governments to improve the quality of teaching in schools. Over 14 million children have benefited from the first 6 months of the campaign.
Dr. Madhav Chavan, Founder and Director of Programs for Pratham, will speak about how ASER and Read India, initiatives led by people, are bringing about social change on a large scale. More broadly, he will speak about how this education movement has become a learning school for a model of democracy in which the government is an effective instrument of the people and not an inadequate master. $15 students; $15 members; $20 nonmembers

The rising economic and political power of Asia is the biggest story of our times. But it is often misunderstood, either as a story of West vs. East or as a story simply of the rise of China and its challenge to America. In his new book "Rivals: How the Power Struggle Between China, India and Japan Will Shape Our Next Decade," Bill Emmott aims to challenge those views. The biggest story, he argues, is and will be the rivalry within Asia now that, for the first time in history, the continent contains three great powers simultaneously, all of which are starting to think of Asia as a coherent whole. The other big stories will be the economic and social changes that China, India, and Japan are all destined to go through during the next decade.

An evening of poetry. Nobel Prize-nominated dissident Bei Dao reads with Jennifer Chang, whose debut collection, "The History of Anonymity" (University of Georgia Press, 2008), explores a nocturnal world of childhood and myth.
Often seen as the preeminent Chinese poet of his generation, Bei Dao was born in Beijing in 1949. In 1978, he co-founded the literary journal Today (Jintian) and the "Misty Poets" movement, whose avant-garde style challenged the social realist style favored by the Communist literary establishment. His poem "The Answer "has been likened to a Chinese democracy movement's equivalent of "Blowin' in the Wind" and was chanted at the Tiananmen Square protests. Bei Dao has lived in England, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, France, and the United States since 1987. He has won numerous awards, including Jeanette Schocken Literary Prize from Bremerhaven, Germany (2005), International Poetry Argana Award from the House of Poetry in Morocco (2002), Tucholsky Prize from Swedish PEN (1990). He is an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and letters.
Jennifer Chang's poems have appeared in New England Review, The New Republic, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Boston Review and the anthologies Best New Poets 2005 (Samovar Press and Meridian, 2005) and Asian American Poetry: The Next Generation (University of Illinois Press, 2004). Her new collection "The History of Anonymity" tours a craggy, translucent landscape of moonlit memories and childhood memories, leading poet Arthur Sze to describe it as "spare yet sinuous, haunted, visionary." Chang co-chairs the advisory board of Kundiman, a non-profit organization that promotes Asian American poetry.

China is on the mind of every marketing executive today. Not only does one need to understand the often enigmanic outlook of the Chinese consumer or business person, but numerous geo-political and macro-economic issues can factor in the most basic of marketing strategies. By 2010, China is predicted to be the 4th largest ad market; a decade ago its ranking was insignificant.
ANA Marketing Skills Training proudly launches a global marketing learning series in partnership with the inter national ist. This lecture will provide some answers to today's China questions on June 24, 2008 at the Harvard Club in New York. Developed to provide varying points of view on contemporary issues of international interest, CHINA: Looking for Answers will help you learn to quickly navigate among the most relevant marketing topics and interact with some of today's best known experts. The lecture is open to just 50 registrants.
This lecture is made possible through the generosity of both the Harvard Business Review and BE International-Global Communication Architects.
Created in January 2003, inter national ist is dedicated to the business needs and challenges of international marketing professionals as they participate in multinational branding and campaign building. In doing so, the magazine portrays the viability of this dynamic industry sector and the passion of the people who are making things happen through marketing around the globe. No other publication has taken on this worldwide role and inter national ist works to meaningfully fill the void by offering insight and perspective through a compelling, informative, and upbeat specialty magazine.
