More than 1,800 years ago, during the Eastern Han Dynasty in China, people began to discover and use wild mushrooms for their unique medicinal properties. Today, San Francisco Bay Area residents know many of the precious edible mushrooms such as “ Dong Chong Xia Cao”, “Ling Zhi” etc. but few know about their medicinal values.

In the history of mushroom cultivation, people have never been satisfied with their current achievements. Mushroom cultivation is a science that is compatible to horticulture science, and many superb wild mushrooms have been domesticated. Among the 10,000 species of wild fungi across the world, more than half of them have economic values to different degrees, and some 2000 of these have important edible and medicinal value. But there are only a few that can be domesticated, and very little work has been to-date in this field. Until the 1970’s, the world mushroom trade was dominated by button-mushrooms, with more than 140 countries or areas in different continents producing this single variety. Shiitake, woodear, oyster and others are now more widely cultivated, but are limited to certain regional species, with different outputs in East Asia and Europe. With the opening and economic development of China, and concurrent increase in people’s living standards, their consumption styles have changed and they now pursue new healthy foods, which has created a new demand for mushrooms. While paying special attention to the reform of traditional cultivation technology, people also place importance on domestication and species introduction. In Mo-Mei Chen’ "The Mushroom Treasures" (1982-2008), she introduces 150 varieties of these irreplaceable gifts of nature, and describes their medicinal uses and cultivation techniques.

Annual Sake Tasting & Lecture: The 100-Year History of Sake Appraisal
Who: Japan Society
When:   Thursday, April 3, 6:30 PM
Where:
333 East 47th Street
New York, NY
Warning: Undefined array key "postalcode" in /home/sites/asianloop/www.asianloop.com/htdocs/events/index.htm on line 275

For 100 years, Japan's National Sake Appraisal has pushed brewers in a spirit of friendly competition toward continuous improvement in the art of sake making, as manifested in its flavors and aromas. Unlike industries that change as a result of new technologies, sake making still depends largely on the subtle quality of rice and water, unpredictable weather, and the skill and artistry of brew masters that allows both established products and lesser known new entrants with high quality sake to win medals in the competition. In this program, John Gauntner, renowned sake expert and a founding member of Sake Export Association, discusses how 100 years of history of sake appraisal has changed the sake industry and aided in the development of new flavors, aromas and styles. Participants will have the rare opportunity to taste some of the sakes that will be presented at Japan's National Sake Appraisal in spring 2008.

Must be 21 years of age.

Tickets: $35/$30 Japan Society members & seniors. Purchase tickets online above or call the Box Office at (212)715-1258. Due to the popularity of the program as well as space restriction, ticket purchase is limited to 2 per order.

This documentary, “Anna May Wong — Frosted Yellow Willows: Her Life, Times and Legend,” introduces the first Asian American international film star (1905-1961) and first Asian American to have her own television show. Anna May Wong starred in Technicolor’s first two-strip color movie, “The Toll of the Sea” (1922), was chosen by Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. to be in “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924), and co-starred with Marlene Dietrich in “Shanghai Express” (1932). The film, narrated by Nancy Kwan, is packed with an abundance of little seen archival footage and images, and follows the ascent of the actress from her humble beginnings to the peak of her international fame.

A discussion on the film with filmmaker Elaine Mae Woo and producer Kathy D. Mazza follows this screening. Woo is a documentarian of Asians in Hollywood from circa 1900 to 1940.

Gangsters are not nice people but when portrayed by James Cagney, Chow Yun-Fat, Tsuruta Koji, or Takakura Ken - we flock to see them. In 1960s Japan, millions of fans made yakuza movies some of the biggest box office hits of the period. Gangsters, gamblers, hookers, and cops lit up the screen to create the Golden Age of Japanese yakuza films. Their tales of chivalry, revenge, betrayal, and the thrill of violence captured the spirit of the post-war generation. Join us for a look into the flowering of the Japanese yakuza movie.

Curated by Ian Buruma, "Gamblers, Gangsters and Other Anti-Heroes" features iconic films made by Toei Studios from the late 1960s to early 1970s. Screenings on March 6, 20, 27, April 3 and April 17 (see web calendar for individual screening details). Programs subject to change.

Inspired by Federico Fellini’s La Strada and a sharp departure from the Nikkatsu Action norm, Glass Johnny stars Shishido as a bike track tout whose mission in life is to make a winner out of a struggling rider (Hirata) and become rich as a result. Before he can achieve this, he becomes the unwilling savior of a pure-hearted, simple-minded prostitute (Ashikawa) on the run from her pimp.

Prior to Glass Johnny, Ashikawa’s portrayals of cute-but-spunky girls had won her a devoted male following--animator Hayao Miyazaki even later used her as a model for his anime heroines. In this film, however, she moves brazenly from childhood to womanhood, while following Giulietta Masina’s journey in La Strada from victimhood to transcendence.

Tickets: $10/$7 Japan Society members & seniors/ $4.50 students (first 20 tickets per screening). Purchase tickets online above or call the Box Office at (212) 715-1258.

Since China and other Asian countries reopened to the West, the understanding of "place", that is, the position and context in which works of art and religious objects were traditionally displayed, has enjoyed new research and emphasis by scholars of Asian art and history.

Tang dynasty Chan temples arrayed Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and other figures in a special cosmology that mapped the journey to enlightenment. Sixth century Buddhist metaphysics about the nature of the mind, plus nativist Taoist beliefs, dictated the positioning of gates and buildings. Within the temple complexes, each religious icon represented a unique milestone on the path to utterly signless awakening. Bodhidharma's teachings deeply inspired this spiritual journey, and elements of his influence can still be traced in many Chinese Buddhist temples. Join us for Andy’s fascinating illustrated presentation on the significance and symbolism of Chan temple architecture and iconography.

Andy Ferguson is a well-known sinologist who has written and translated works on Chinese traditional culture and produced an acclaimed two hour video designed for travelers on Chinese history. Author of Zen’s Chinese Heritage Andy is also the founder of South Mountain China Tours. He works closely with Bill Porter (pen name “Red Pine”), and together the two have sought out and explored scores of little known historical sites, including the traditional homes of Lao-tsu, Chuang-tsu, Fu-hsi, Bodhidharma and many of ancient China's Zen masters.

Over the last 25 years, most developing countries have experienced a
slowdown in growth, rising inequality and increased economic instability.
The outcome is, Ha-Joon Chang contends, due to the policies imposed on them
by the rich countries and the international organizations they control -
free trade, free international investment, privatization, stronger
protection of intellectual property rights and conservative macroeconomic
policies. Chang argues for a fundamental reform of the international
economic system and for national policies focused on raising long-term
productivity (mostly) in manufacturing.

Ha-Joon Chang is a Reader in the Political Economy of Development at
Cambridge University and a fellow at the Center for Economic & Policy
Research in Washington, DC.

Book Discussion Group: "Tales of South Asia"
When:   Tuesday, April 08 (7:00 p.m.)
Where:
55 West 3rd Avenue
San Mateo, CA
Warning: Undefined array key "postalcode" in /home/sites/asianloop/www.asianloop.com/htdocs/events/index.htm on line 275

The San Mateo Main Library book discussion group will be meeting on Tuesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the book "Untouchables" written by Narendra Jadhav. This will be the third book in our spring discussion series, "Tales of South Asia." Please note that the room for this meeting has been changed. The discussion will take place in the Biotechnology Seminar Room on the second floor of the Main Library, 55 West Third Avenue.

According to a review in Booklist:

Jadhav, head of economic research for the Reserve Bank of India, is a member of India's Dalits--or untouchables--a group that numbers 165 million. His moving memoir is a tribute to his parents, who made it their goal to educate their children, especially his father, Damu, who stood up to the caste system. Jadhav paints a sweeping picture of the twentieth-century human-rights movement led by Babasaheb Ambedkar, leader of the Dalit movement and Damu's lifelong inspiration. Hearing Babasaheb's urging to "educate, organize, agitate," Damu finds the courage to defy his role as the village servant, a tradition dating back 3,500 years. Jadhav embellishes his tale of politics and the rights movement with poignant glimpses into his parents' everyday lives: how their hut leaked during the monsoons, shelling tamarind pods for pennies a day, the devastation of the plague on families packed into tenements. One of his most surprising revelations is that even today he is asked about his caste, which remains "an inseparable part" of his identity.

This is a drop in book group. There is no need to pre-register. Just read the book and come ready to discuss. You can reserve your copy through our web site, www.smplibrary.org or by calling us at 522-7818.

Copies of the May book, "The Inheritance of Loss', will be available at the April 8 meeting.

From Edo to Meiji: The Case of Shibata Zeshin

In recent years, institutional, social and art historians have increasingly stressed the continuities that exist between the closing decades of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji era. This analysis, which contrasts strongly with earlier, "sudden break," readings of 19th-century Japan, is confirmed by the career of Shibata Zeshin, who developed most of his technical innovations some 20 years before the Meiji Restoration. This panel discussion brings together James L. McClain, Professor and Chair of History at Brown University and Thomas. J. Rimer, Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature, Theatre, and Art, University of Pittsburgh, for an in-depth look at a key moment in Japanese history. Joe Earle, Director, Japan Society Gallery will moderate. Followed by a reception.

CHINESE VOICES
A look at Chinese living an American experience in San Francisco, and those in the Pearl River Delta city of Guangzhou -- all forging new identities as they search for opportunity, equity and meaning.

Separated by the Pacific Ocean, linked by cultural roots, nurtured by generations of migration and interchange, people in America and China consider new answers to old questions: Which society is more modern? More competitive? More comfortable? These are stories of ordinary people who follow their values on personal journeys that are wholesome, joyous and distressing.

San Francisco
Artistic Mixes by Laurie Burkitt
For more than 150 years, generations of Chinese immigrants have come to America and set up shop. Their small businesses have multiplied, straying far from laundries and restaurants, to enterprises that more deeply engage new American sensibilities. Shinmin Li has blended a unique art form with upscale tastes and created a thriving business.

Tradition by Cynthia Dizikes
He moved to San Francisco from southern China as a boy. He sees himself as an American, but says he still feels a responsibility to his Chinese roots. Now, Randy Deng wants to start his own family.

Property by Mason Cohn
Owning a home has motivated Americans across generations. But while a buy-first, think-later culture has put homes out of reach for many Americans, some of San Francisco's Chinese have cracked the real estate game. Down payments come from the top of the family tree. It's a story of hard work and shrewd sacrifice.

New Neighbors by Jason Witmer
In a search for affordable housing, many Chinese families have moved into black neighborhoods. Despite bouts of inflammatory rhetoric and fear, Chinese Americans and African Americans are learning to get along.

Fatherhood by Susa Lim
How do you transmit old-country cultural values? Frank Ung works hard to teach his children Chinese ways and hints at a discovery: his teenage son and daughter are both irretrievably American, and Chinese American.

Missing China by Brian Aguilar
Like most migrants, Xiao Lan Yu came to America in search of a better life. Slowly, her family's living situation has improved, thanks to hard work and study. Still, she wonders whether leaving China was the right decision.

Guangzhou
New Wealth by Laurie Burkitt
With China's economy growing at about 11 percent a year, most people remain poor, but a new middle class is emerging – especially in the cities. Once prodigious savers, some people are joining a new consumer culture by spending more. One young woman – with talent, pluck and a good education – savors her buying power and upward mobility.

Separate and Unequal by Brian Aguilar
Over the last 20 years, an estimated 200 million rural Chinese have resettled in the cities they helped build. In Guangzhou, migrants make up a third of the population. Considered outsiders, the adults face discrimination and inequality. So do their children: most public schools won't educate them.

AIDS Ward by Mason Cohn
AIDS in China is often transmitted through risky behaviors – mostly shooting drugs and unprotected sex. But fear of family shame keeps many suffering in secret. Society's failure to fully confront the stigma and the disease means some patients are left to die alone in hospital beds, bearing the scars of double lives their families could never face.

Remember the Wedding by Susa Lim
More money, fancier dreams and a traditional desire to memorialize a rite of passage have been a boon to wedding photography businesses across China. Couples often put on exotic costumes – Eastern and Western. Photographer, Han Songlin captures the moment.

Risky Bets by Cynthia Dizikes
For droves of new individual investors in China, buying stocks can be a way to pass the time, or a chance to make a better life. But risk is always there. Some say they feel stressed out or trapped: sucked into a market that may lead to riches or losses.

Some workers who fuel China's manufacturing boom are tossed aside – like broken, but replaceable parts – once they are injured. Monitors of China's labor practices report that a widespread system of corruption lets companies ignore safety and compensation laws.

Night Haunts: A Journey Through Nocturnal London Book Party — A Nocturnal Happening With Author Sukhdev Sandhu
When:   April 10; 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Night Haunts: A Journey Through Nocturnal London is a series of essays and tone poems written with and about the ghosts who populate the London night: exorcists, graffers, street cleaners, urban-fox hunters, avian policemen, the nuns of Tyburn. Early reviewers have described it as “lyrical, hallucinatory and harrowing;” like “fireworks in the night sky, brilliantly illuminating;” and “a Neil Gaiman comic written by Luc Sante.” According to Michael Moorcock, it offers “some of the greatest insights we have into rarely described aspects of contemporary London and about as complete an urban portrait as it's possible to read."

“If London Could Cry” is a special musical performance of Night Haunts, featuring a collaboration between Sukhdev Sandhu, Associate Professor at NYU’s A/P/A Studies, and the sound artist and film composer Andrew Ingkavet. It will be preceded by a screening of Alain Tanner and Claude Goretta’s “Nice Time” (1957), a short but masterly evocation of the dizzying, melancholic raptures of a night in Piccadilly Circus.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Generously underwritten by Maurice and Muriel Fulton
Speaker: Dr. Daphne Rosenzweig, author, professor, museum exhibition organizer and appraiser, is an internationally known expert in the field of Asian Art and Archaeology.

Japanese prints have appealed to many Western collectors. While living in Paris, van Gogh was employed as a 'runner' for a Japanese art dealer and accumulated many prints that inspired his own work. Since the 1950s, several eager generations of Americans have had the opportunity to collect not only 18th and 19th century prints, but also some of the exciting 20th and 21st century works, as well. The pleasures to be found in Japanese print collecting are the focus of this presentation.

With some of the highest rates of broadband and wireless Internet penetration in the world, Korea and Japan are home to thriving online communities that affect politics, shape public opinion, and forge new forms of social bonding. In Korea, the net has empowered citizen journalism and created a new national pastime of “massively multiplayer online games.” According to the Washington Post, more blogs are written in Japanese than in English, despite the fact that English speakers outnumber Japanese speakers by five to one. Both countries are bastions of participatory Internet use, but what accounts for subtle differences in user attitudes and behavior? In addition to exploring the challenges and lessons learned by people blogging about Korean and Japanese society and politics, the panel discusses how the peculiarities of Japanese and Korean political and online cultures affect participatory democracy in those countries, and whether these experiences will be a bellwether for the global community.

Kristina Wong combines a zany sense of humor with biting insight in this swear-to-god-not-autobiographical portrayal of the high incidence of anxiety, depression and mental illness among Asian American women. Using monologues, movement, humor and a host of pop culture references, Wong uses a set of unfinished knitting as well as print brochures and TV advertisements dealing with mental illness, as comedic foils while probing the seriousness of the subject.

Post performance discussion with Karina Kim, University Counselling, and Frances Wong, Director of Asian Services, St. Vincent's Hospital.

Originally rooted in the Buddhist tradition of Japanese American culture, taiko drumming in North America has steadily increased in popularity and in recent years has been featured in popular music collaborations, movies, television programs and commercials, and a well-known video game. With this increased exposure, individual drummers and the taiko community at large have been forced to address issues of copyright, transmission of repertoire, and self-identification within the “world music” marketplace.

In this lecture-demonstration, I will chart the history and development of taiko in North America, paying special attention to Soh Daiko of New York City. From there, we will explore the role of the body within taiko through performance theory, a short demonstration, and audience participation. Finally, I will discuss Asian American identity and my own activities as a taiko drummer, highlighting the collaborations with Iron Chef, New York Anime Festival, Lincoln Center Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble, and Korn.

Note: Drummers and non-drummers alike are encouraged to participate. Please wear comfortable loose-fitting clothes and bring a bottle of water.

The China Price is a landmark eyewitness exposé about the consequences of China’s ceaseless pursuit of economic growth, from unethical business practices to pollution to an epidemic of occupational diseases. Author Alexandra Harney takes readers into Chinese factories and their dormitories to show youths who have flocked from the countryside to take dangerous manufacturing jobs. She visits model factories, where rules on working hours and product safety are followed, as well as “shadow” factories (often operated under contract to the same owners) where anything goes in the drive to produce cheaper products. Harney also finds stirrings of change; aided by regional labor shortages, rising wages and intrepid activists. Chinese workers are demanding—and gradually winning—more rights.

Alexandra Harney worked as a reporter and editor at the Financial Times from 1998 to 2007. She has been reporting on Asia for most of the past decade and currently lives in Hong Kong.

Somewhere between fast-food purveyor and upscale grocer, between banking center and bookstore lies the realm of the Japanese "konbini." Long catering to Japan's round-the-clock gastronomic, entertainment and banking needs, the Japanese convenience model offers much from which its American counterparts can learn. Famima!!, the U.S. offshoot of Japan's FamilyMart, is the first company to introduce the konbini model to the U.S. and seeks to build as many as 200 outlets on the West Coast by 2009. Our distinguished speakers examine konbini's cultural influences in the U.S. and discuss whether a business model synonymous with Japan's legendary customer service, efficiency and high quality can be successfully transplanted into America's cultural diversity.

By the year 2100, many scientists believe that the Earth's average temperature could rise by as much as six degrees Celsius. In a compelling investigation, National Geographic leads a degree-by-degree journey to explore what each rising—and critical—degree could mean for the future of our people and planet.

Through powerful filmmaking and intimate profiles, this special illustrates how global warming has already affected the reefs of Australia, the ice fields of Greenland, and the Amazonian rain forest. With a sobering look at the effects of our world's insatiable appetite for energy, Six Degrees Could Change the World explains what's real, what's still controversial, and how existing technologies and remedies could help dial back the global thermometer.

East Asian Multilateralism: Prospects for Regional Stability

While the Iraq War and Middle East conflicts preoccupy much of the developed world, fundamental changes are occurring in East Asia. North Korea has tested nuclear weapons, even as it and South Korea have effectively entered a period of tepid détente; relations among China, Japan and South Korea are a complex mixture of conflict and cooperation; and Japan is developing more forthright security polities, even as it deepens ties with the United States. Together, these developments pose vital questions for world stability and security. Professors Kent Calder and Francis Fukuyama, authors of East Asian Multilateralism: Prospects for Regional Stability, examine the geopolitical and economic implications of shifting alignments in East Asia. They will also discuss their new assessment, including prospects for deeper regional cooperation, and pose tough questions about America's security and national interests in the region.

La Pena Cultural Center
3105 Shattuck Ave.,
Berkeley, CA

Screening of "Bombies": The film, directed by Jack Silberman, is a past winner of the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival and details the U.S. bombing campaign in Laos and the enduring legacy of unexploded cluster bombs.

Between 1964 and 1973 the U.S. conducted a "Secret War" in Laos, dropping over 2 million tons of bombs, including 260 million cluster bombs. The U.S. carried out 580,000 bombing missions, equal to one bombing mission every eight minutes around the clock for nine years, making Laos the most heavily bombed country per capita in history. Unexploded cluster bombs continue to maim and kill villagers 35 years after the end of war.

Panel Discussion: Following the screening, a panel will feature first-hand witnesses to the air war and its aftermath, including a man who took part in the bombing, a journalist who helped to expose it, and a Laotian who survived. Other panelists include those advocating for the removal of cluster bombs in Laos and an international ban on cluster bombs.

The Schools Not Bombs Campaign is a special initiative of Legacies of War and Give Children a Choice to help build schools in impoverished Laotian villages affected by cluster bombs.

Sponsors of the event include Legacies of War, Center for Lao Studies with Asia Society, Mennonite Central Committee U.S., West Coast Mennonite Central Committee, and Friends Committee on National Legislation.

$10 admission to support Schools Not Bombs Campaign *

Japanese Companies & Employment Litigation: Special Concerns

George Pierce, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Toyota Tsusho America, Inc.

Japanese companies are often targeted in employment lawsuits in the United States by employees who are not comfortable with traditional Japanese business or cultural etiquette. The laws prohibiting sexual harassment, national origin, gender and age discrimination are often used as a weapon to challenge traditional Japanese practices. Communication also often presents special problems. The Japanese "yes" may mean something different to an American. When Japanese executives testify in court, other potential problems arise. It is critical to prepare the executive carefully and, if necessary, be sure that there is a competent interpreter present. This program addresses the above issues and presents real-life examples of lawsuits as well as special, practical issues facing Japanese companies, and how to resolve them. The speakers have many years' experience advising Japanese companies with regard to their legal obligations in the U.S.

Like all immigrant groups, Korea-born and second generation Korean-Americans lose competency in their heritage language through successive generations. The attrition of Korean language skills in children is often exacerbated by parental preferences and schooling practices. For example, in Los Angeles, Korean-speaking parents often prefer to enroll their children in all-English programs. This study describes the documented success of a program that helps children maintain and develop knowledge of their heritage language while acquiring high levels of English and academic skills. Furthermore, this study discusses the socio-linguistic profiles of English-speaking Korean heritage learners who enroll in a college-level Korean class. Using empirical research based on the heritage learners’ linguistic profiles, it examines the importance of a placement decision and pedagogical approaches.

Lacquer has been used as an artistic medium in Asia for centuries. Derived from the resin of the lac tree, it is often combined with colorants and used as paint, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and other precious substances, covered with sprinkled gold, and carved into intricate and engaging designs. In China, Korea, and Japan, lacquer enhances tables and boxes for writing, vessels for storing and serving beverages, and containers for cosmetics, incense, and other luxuries. In this insightful lecture, explore the many ways in which regional tastes and interests transformed the art of lacquer and fostered the creation of works of great variety and beauty.

The Korea Society is pleased to present Inside North Korea with the New York Philharmonic, an exhibition of photographs by award-winning photographer Mark Edward Harris that document the concert by the New York Philharmonic orchestra in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on February 26, 2008.

In these fascinating and often-stunning photographs, Harris offers a portrait of the historic event, encompassing both the concert itself and all the other major activities of the nearly 300-member delegation—artists, staff, accompanying patrons, guests and press corps. The exhibition captures multiple aspects of the New York Philharmonic orchestra’s two-day visit to Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Most notably, the photographs afford an inside view of this previously unimaginable influx of Americans—the largest group since the days of the Korean War over half a century ago—and insights into the inhabitants of this reclusive country.

The exhibition is accompanied by Harris’ book, Inside North Korea, published by Chronicle Books in 2007, which features photographs from previous visits to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. These photographs document life in Pyongyang and scenes from along the northern border with China, the highly militarized DMZ and the tightly controlled economic and tourist zones. The book includes short essays, extended captions and a foreword by noted North Korea expert Bruce Cumings. The book will be available for purchase at The Korea Society during the period of the exhibition.

Following its run at The Korea Society, Inside North Korea with the New York Philharmonic will be available for travel to colleges, universities, galleries and non-profit institutions across America.
