Investing in China: Understanding China's Investment Environment
Who: NYU Stern
When:   March 6 & 7, 2008
Where:
NYU Stern, 44 W. 4th St.,
New York, NY
Warning: Undefined array key "postalcode" in /home/sites/asianloop/www.asianloop.com/htdocs/events/index.htm on line 275

Stern brings together innovative research with a practical framework for understanding the Chinese economy and the investment opportunities that exist there. The world's largest nation has stormed onto the global economic stage over the last quarter century, and a remarkable set of economic opportunities have emerged. However, there are also many pitfalls and complexities. Popular accounts of China today depict either a world of unending economic opportunity or an infinitely complex world of social connections, corruption and capricious authoritarian officials. Neither of these approaches accurately depicts the reality of what is actually occurring economically, socially and politically in China and what opportunities these changes will yield.

Who Should Attend
Executives managing or considering managing a sizable investment portfolio who seek a deeper understanding of China's economic reforms and their implications for the future of economic, social and political change in China

Executives who formulate strategy for managing their China and/or international portfolios

Program Benefits
During this program participants will:
Examine the complex process that has allowed the Chinese reforms to unfold

Learn the ways in which these political processes have yielded specific investment opportunities and how to analyze the economic landscape to reveal these opportunities

Develop a framework for analyzing investment opportunities in China's transition economy

Utilize that framework to evaluate actual cases (IPOs, domestic and blue-chip firms, funds) that are potential investment opportunities

Apply the framework to your investment portfolio

Tuition is $2,500. Accomodations not included.

Gangsters are not nice people but when portrayed by James Cagney, Chow Yun-Fat, Tsuruta Koji, or Takakura Ken - we flock to see them. In 1960s Japan, millions of fans made yakuza movies some of the biggest box office hits of the period. Gangsters, gamblers, hookers, and cops lit up the screen to create the Golden Age of Japanese yakuza films. Their tales of chivalry, revenge, betrayal, and the thrill of violence captured the spirit of the post-war generation. Join us for a look into the flowering of the Japanese yakuza movie.

Curated by Ian Buruma, "Gamblers, Gangsters and Other Anti-Heroes" features iconic films made by Toei Studios from the late 1960s to early 1970s. Screenings on March 6, 20, 27, April 3 and April 17 (see web calendar for individual screening details). Programs subject to change.

Recent advancements in technology and media are altering our culture in profound ways, blurring the line between recorded, reproducible art and live performance, and between commercial entertainment and fine art. Over a two-part discussion, prominent players in the arts and technology fields discuss these shifting paradigms and their effects on their industries. In a keynote dialogue, Academy Award-nominated film director and director of Broadway’s The Lion King Julie Taymor, whose artistic career has spanned experimental puppet theater to the grand opera, and famed musical theater and opera director Amon Miyamoto share how the changing climate in our high-tech environment is shaping not only their careers but also their artistic intentions and relationship to their audiences. In the second forum, video game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Toshio Tsuchiya, the Executive Director of the Internet Division of Nippon Television, and Satoshi Endo, Chief Contents Officer of ASCII, discuss the evolution of their business models in an age where the variety of media interfaces is multiplying exponentially at a rapid pace. Co-organized by Asahi Shimbun and Japan Society.

Tickets: This event is free and open to the public. General admission registration is through Asahi Shimbun. For additional information, please contact Ryohei Yamamoto at (212) 715-1229 or ryamamoto@japansociety.org.

Enter the ephemeral setting of the “floating world” (ukiyo) of Japan’s Edo period. Ukiyo refers to the dream-like realm created within the theatres, teahouses, and entertainment districts of the capital city, Edo (modern day Tokyo). Captured vividly in “pictures of the floating world” (ukiyo-e), this urban subculture romanticized the lives of musicians, kabuki actors, geishas, and their patrons. Drama and Desire is the first exhibition to highlight the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s collection of ukiyo-e paintings, considered one of the finest in the world.

Dr. Yoko Woodson, the museum’s curator of Japanese art, will discuss this remarkable set of eighty paintings and the society that inspired ukiyo-e. Dr. Woodson’s talk will be followed by a presentation from Shozo Sato, professor emeritus of the Art and Design Faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor Sato will examine the dramatic tradition of kabuki, the history of male actors, and their portrayal of both male and female characters during the Edo period. This event also includes a docent-led tour of the special exhibition and light refreshments.

This program has been made possible in part by Fidelity Investments through the Fidelity Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Bernard Osher Foundation and the Henri and Tomoye Takahashi Charitable Foundation.

Geoff welcomes us into his home to view a selection of his best prints, paintings and illustrated books, with special emphasis on a few of his favorite collecting genres: ghost prints and hot springs triptychs. In honor of the recent AAM show, he’ll also show us a group of Yoshitoshi prints. Organized by the Japanese American National Museum, kip fulbeck: part asian, 100% hapa is an exhibition of portraits by award-winning filmmaker and artist Kip Fulbeck, who traveled the country photographing Hapa of all ages and walks of life. Originally used as a derogatory label derived from the Hawaiian word for "half," Hapa has since been embraced as a term of pride by many whose mixed racial heritage includes Asian or Pacific Islander descent.

Fulbeck's work seeks to address in words and images the one question that Hapa are frequently asked: "What are you?" By pairing the portraits of Hapa - unadorned by make-up, jewelry, and clothing - along with their handwritten statements on who they are, this exhibition offers a powerful yet intimate perspective on the complex nature of contemporary American identity.

This exhibition has been brought to NYU Kimmel Gallery by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU and the Japanese American National Museum. The traveling version of this exhibition is sponsored by the James Irvine Foundation and the National Museum's Discover Nikkei Web site, an award-winning, multilingual site that shares personal and community histories from Nikkei around the world. Discover Nikkei is coordinated by the Japanese American National Museum and funded by The Nippon Foundation. NYU A/P/A Institute is an Affiliate of the project.

Discussion and Book Signing with Palani Mohan - "Vanishing Giants: Elephants of Asia"

"Vanishing Giants - Elephants of Asia" is a collection of extraordinary images that will provoke, intrigue and enthrall. Palani Mohan devoted 6 years and traveled to 11 Asian countries to create this intimate glimpse into the world of the Asian elephant, a creature which – even as its African cousin flourishes – is threatened as never before.

But this is far more than simply a book of elephant photographs. Rather, it’s a tale of two species: that of the elephant, and the human beings with whom it shares its abodes. It’s a love story, and a war story, a history of animosity and attraction, a study of shattered symbiosis. For all through Asia, it seems, a love-hate relationship thrives where elephants and human beings co-exist.

http://www.asiasociety.org/pictureasia/elephants/

Palani Mohan was born in Chennai, India, and moved to Australia as a child. His photographic career began 20 years ago at the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper and since then he has been based in London, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and now Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Mohan’s work is regularly featured in many of the world’s leading magazines and newspapers, and he has published three photographic books.

In 1999, in response to international concern over sexual tourism to Southeast Asia, the Japanese Diet outlawed child prostitution and child pornography. These laws then became directed primarily at enjo kosai, or compensated dating between middle aged men and junior high school girls. In the wake of 9/11, the Japanese cabinet radically shifted counterterrorism policy towards more military solutions. Think Global, Fear Local: Sex, Violence, and Anxiety in Contemporary Japan, a new book by David Leheny, considers the relationship between these policies and examines the unintended consequences of attempts to enforce international norms at a national level. Dr. Leheny, Henry Wendt III '55 Professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University, will speak about the implications for Japan of the relationship between international security norms and expectations of the proper coercive role of governments.

Film: Plains Wanderer (Daisogen no wataridori)

In the nine-part Wanderer series (1959-1962), Akira Kobayashi plays Taki, a man with the looks of a Western hero--from a horse to fringe, a guitar and even a trusty bullwhip--traveling on Japan’s back roads. Taki involves himself in a fight alongside the Ainu (Japan’s aborigines) against a developer who wants to turn their land into an airstrip. In addition to having the landowner's niece fall in love with him, Taki finds a rival then an ally in Masa (Shishido) as they exchange snappy banter and slick moves throughout the film.

Recycling genre conventions already familiar to most American audiences, but with a Japanese twist, "Eastern Westerns" like Plains Wanderer were a popular subgenre within Nikkatsu Action, most of them featuring a good-hearted hero battling injustice against the majestic outdoor backdrop of mountainous, remote Hokkaido.

Tickets: $10/$7 Japan Society members & seniors/ $4.50 students (first 20 tickets per screening). Purchase tickets online above or call the Box Office at (212) 715-1258.

This event is part of the NO BORDERS, NO LIMITS 1960s Nikkatsu Action Cinema series.

What does it mean, for example, to be lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer and Chinese American or Asian American? To further pursue a critical and challenging community, Q + Me is a curated screening and discussion, exploring questions of Queer Asian American identity and artistic expression through the work of three different artists working in film and video: Stuart Gaffney, Lynne Chan and Alan Calpe.

Avery Brundage: The Man, the Collection, the Legacy

Celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Society for Asian Art at this symposium that explores and honors the man whose collection made the Asian Art Museum possible as well as the organization whose determination secured the collection for the city of San Francisco. Consisting of some 8,000 objects, the Brundage Collection forms the core of the Asian Art Museum's holdings. Its depth and breadth reflect the grand passion of a keen collecting talent—a man possessed with the idea of creating a great museum devoted entirely to Asian art. Kim Sunée was only three years old when her mother left her on a marketplace bench with a fistful of food and promised to be right back. When she was taken in by the police three days later and told she had been abandoned, all she had left in the world was a handful of crumbs. Through her adoption by a couple in New Orleans, her adolescence as only one of two Asian children in her community and her relationship with a famous French businessman, the pursuit of fine food has been a constant for Kim in her search for an identity that seems at once intimate and elusive.

Reading from her new memoir Trail of Crumbs: Hunger, Love and the Search for Home and taking questions, Kim Sunée will bring the audience along on her lyrical journey of sustenance and self, from Korea to America to Provence.

ina's First Empire? Interpreting the Material Record of the Erligang Culture
Who: Center for Chinese Studies, Archaeological Research Facility
When:   Wednesday, March 19, 2008, NOON
Where:
Room 101, Archaeological Research Facility, (2251 College Building)
University of California at Berkeley

In the last few decades Chinese archaeology has documented a wide spread of material culture called the Erligang culture after a type site in modern Zhengzhou. Large-scale dissemination of a distinctive material seems to have been fairly common at the beginning of civilizations, probably the best known instance being the “Uruk expansion” in ancient Mesopotamia. Additional close parallels are provided by the Indus Valley
civilization in the Old World and the Olmec civilization in the New World. In all four cases, the homogeneity of material culture over a large area suggests something more than casual contact: something of great magnitude was taking place, an intense interaction of some kind. So far, however, specialists have reached no consensus as to the social mechanisms involved, no agreement as to how things, ideas, and/or people were spreading. Although writing seems to have been in use in all four civilizations, inscriptions are few and poorly understood, so it is only from material culture that we can hope to learn anything about the archaeological problem. By comparing the four material cultures, I hope to draw up a list of possible models for cultural expansion, models that
might not occur to us if we focused just on one region. Two major questions will be addressed. What are the criteria for correlating archaeological remains with political structures? What is the logic of privileging elite objects or utilitarian utensils in describing and interpreting the evidence of expansion?

Wang Haicheng earned his MA at Peking University (2000) and PhD at Princeton (2007). He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Chinese Studies at UC Berkeley

Makdong (meaning "youngest sibling") returns home after two years of mandatory military service to find himself a stranger in a small town that has urbanized beyond recognition. Jobless, penniless, and unable to find work to support a family on the verge of falling apart, he heads for Seoul and a world of trouble. A beautiful woman he fortuitously saved on the train ride home leads him to a new life in organized crime.

Green Fish, Lee Chang-dong's acclaimed début film, features an all-star cast: Han Suk-kyu, arguably the most popular actor of the late 1990s; Shim Hye-jin, as the femme fatale; Song Kang-ho (The Host, JSA, The Show Must Go On), then fairly new on to the silver screen; Moon Sung-keun; Jung Jin-young; Oh Ji-hye; Myung Kay-nam; and Han Suk-kyu's brother, Han Sun-kyu. The film also benefited from a prestigious crew, including producer Kang Woo-suk. Often called the most powerful man in Korean cinema, Kang topped Cine21 magazine's list of the “50 Most Powerful Men in Korean Cinema” for seven consecutive years (1998–2004).

At once a stark, contemporary noir and a controlled melodrama, Green Fish immediately conquered the critics and won the Dragons & Tigers Award for new Asian directors at the 1997 Vancouver International Film Festival. Prior to his first film, Lee wrote the scripts for Park Kwang-soo's To The Starry Island and A Single Spark—both classics of the early 1990s.

In addition to a brief tenure as South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun’s first Minister for Culture and Tourism, Lee moved on to become one of South Korea's most prominent filmmakers. Peppermint Candy (2000), Oasis (2002), and his most recent feature, Secret Sunshine (2007), have drawn widespread critical acclaim, with the latter winning a best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The entrepreneur, the investor and the enterprise collaborate on the new paradigm LBS is stirring up online, within mobility, personalization and socializing. Maps become a required component of many online applications, creating a new market for entrepreneurs and investors to invent revenue models and return on investment.

GIS and geographical search makes it possible for users to search content on their mobile device and use local search engines for a complete web search experience. Companies are increasingly turning to their users to collect data, such as random cell phones on the highway help deliver Google traffic information. Virtual representations of the physical world are becoming more realistic and important. As this happens, their geographic location becomes more accurate; therefore, more relevant to almost everything people do on the go, since the immediacy of the information needed is more critical.

The right platforms and tools to easily create geographical content have finally emerged to represent and search the physical world online. With geographical data and maps online a new breed of developers with increasingly powerful tools built on the back of open standards and free APIs from the likes of Google, is a new way to share your location with friends or with other
websites and services! It's built on open APIs so that developers can build all kinds of applications that respond to your location.

These topics, and more, will be explored in a lively discussion by pur expert panel. Questions they will be looking to answer include:
• What is an LBS platform? Examples?
• Compare the different LBS API’s openly available nowadays.
• What is the typical revenue generating business models based on LBS?
• How an open source LBS platform can generate revenues and profits?
• How is the location information generated while you roam around?
• How Privacy is affected, and what can be done about it?

From the critical realism of the Left-Wing Film Movement of the 1930s to the socialist realism and “revolutionary romanticism” of the early People’s Republic and finally the model opera films of the Cultural Revolution, Chinese revolutionary cinema saw a “formal drift” away from the cinematic aesthetics of realism. This drift accompanied a shift in the idea of the "real" from an existential category to an epistemological or even metaphysical category. Ironically, the formal drift in revolutionary cinema, though corresponding to an ever increasing importance of ideology, may have helped to set the stage for the collapse of the authority of Maoism

The 2008 U.S. Presidential Election and Japan

As the U.S. presidential election campaign heats up with caucuses in Iowa, primaries in New Hampshire, and “Super Tuesday” on February 5, Japanese interest in the race is growing.

In the 1960s, Japanese liked the Democratic Party largely because of President John Kennedy and his brother Bobby, who visited Japan as attorney general in 1962 to great acclaim. In the 1970s, by contrast, the Republican Party was disliked in Japan because of the “Nixon Shocks” of 1971 (when President Richard Nixon ended the convertibility of the U.S. dollar to gold, resulting in a sharp appreciation of the yen) and of 1972 (when President Nixon visited China without consulting with Japan).

When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, the “Ron-Yasu” relationship that developed between Reagan and Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone proved so advantageous to Japan, the Japanese leadership has come to favor Republicans over Democrats.

Since 1981, Republicans have occupied the White House for 19 of the past 27 years, lending them the stability, continuity, and familiarity that the Japanese leadership values. Democrats are viewed as more protectionist on trade issues than Republicans. Japanese fear that Democrats would favor China over Japan. They remember that in 1998, President Bill Clinton visited China for nine days without stopping in Japan. In the November/December 2007 issue of Foreign Affairs, Senator Hillary Clinton wrote, “Our relationship with China will be the most important bilateral relationship in the world in this century.” Quite a contrast to the 1980s, when U.S. Ambassador Mike Mansfield proclaimed, “The U.S.-Japan relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world, bar none.”

Japanese leaders, pragmatic as they are, will no doubt adjust quickly to whomever is elected president of the country that for them remains the most important ally in the world, bar none.

Glen S. Fukushima, a native of California, is President & CEO of Airbus Japan and former President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan. From 1985 to 1990, he was based in Washington, D.C. as Director for Japanese Affairs and, later, Deputy Assistant USTR for Japan and China at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

Each of us know we have more potential than we normally operate from. We all have moments of brilliance and clarity that haunts us because we know we are capable and competent and smart and sometimes we don’t get what we aspire. Why? How do we access that genius within us? In his 18 years of working with over 15,000 executives, Dr. Kaipa found that there are four essential questions that provoke deeper inquiry into who we are and shift what we do. The questions are:

What is my North Star? In other words what is the highest aspiration that I have for myself?
What is my signature strength?
What is my Core Incompetence? Where is my foot nailed to the floor?
What is my Energy Trigger? What energizes me, inspires me or excites me reliably, repeatedly especially after a draining time?
What is my biggest Energy Drain? What is the alarm system that is connected with my energy drain?
These elements are part of our personal DNA and on March 25th, together we will explore the questions and deepen our own understanding of where we are and where we want to go.

Sander Gilman, Distinguished Professor of the Liberal Arts and Sciences at Emory University, explores the notion of dangerous citizens in a global perspective with his talk based on his latest research “Why Are We Afraid of Our Food? The U.S., China, And The Food Chain.”

Our membership has grown rapidly from 8 members at the club's inception to 80 plus today. The club attracts a wide range of participants and welcomes members from all age and ethnic groups.

HCAPC meets every Thursday at the Houston Chinese Culture Center at 10303 Westoffice, Houston. Our volunteer teachers, Mrs. Janice Chen, Mrs. Katy Cheng, and Dr. Y. T. Wei, offer instruction and assistance on various painting techniques such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, and pencil. In 2005, we expanded our teaching staff by adding two teachers, Mrs. Susan Tsai and Mrs. Grace Szeto. Every year, HCAPC also organizes two art shows, two field trips, and several lectures/demos by renowned artists.

Our annual general meeting is held on the first Thursday of December, during which we discuss and vote on various pertinent issues, elect new officers and hold a year-end party.

All meetings, unless specified, are held at the Houston Chinese Culture Center.

The United States and Japan have had a vigorous economic relationship over the previous half century. However, the collapse of Japan's bubble economy, the rise of globalization and the emergence of China have altered many of the relationship's facets and adjustment has sometimes been difficult. Over the coming decades, this essential relationship will continue to evolve and mature, buffeted by these and other factors, and successful outcomes on many key issues will depend on it.
