Start the year off right by undrstanding the benfits of tai-chi and qi-gong and how to incorporate them into your healthy lifestyle. Do you want to relax and recharge your mind and body in beautiful natural surroundings after the long winter nights of hibernate? If you do, I invite you to join me next weekend for a retreat at a luxurious spa in the Catskill Mountains. I will be conducting the workshop “Traditional Chinese Healing for Today’s Body” from January 5th ,2008 through January 6 th, 2008 at the New Age Health Spa in Neversink, New York. The spa is located on 280 pristine acres in Sullivan County and is just a three-hour drive from New York City.
We will use Tai Chi exercises and Qigong breathing movements to help relieve stress and strengthen the immune system. No experience is necessary because I will divide a Tai Chi form into separate exercises that are easy to learn. With its smooth flowing postures and deep breathing, Tai Chi improves flexibility and strengthens joints to alleviate pain and improve posture, balance, and coordination. We will also use the heated indoor pool for aqua Tai Chi exercises that improve overall balance and control. I encourage participants to request exercises for their own specific needs.
The spa offers many healthy activities to complement the workshop. You may join a guided hike that will take you to a spectacular view of the Catskills, meditate on a solitary labyrinth walk, or enjoy the many beautiful nature trails on the property. If you want to challenge yourself to scale the fifty-foot Alpine Tower, the climbing team will provide the safety harness and climbing rope. There is also a fully equipped gym and exercise studio and even a Sweat Lodge to cleanse and purify your body, mind and spirit.

Oshogatsu History Oshogatsu, or the New Year, is Japan’s most important yearly observance and a time of renewal for families. The Japanese make special effort in the final days of December to clear away debts and obligations so as to start the new year afresh.
Before Oshogatsu arrives, typically on January 1, many Japanese will gather at locally prominent shrines and temples, where they greet the stroke of midnight with exclamations of “Akemashite omedeto gozaimasu!,” or “Happy New Year!” At home, the celebrations include exchanging a ceremonial drink called otoso, a sweet kind of sake and enjoying a special dish called ozoni, which is a traditional stew.
The Japanese share many other holiday customs with westerners, such as sending New Year’s greetings on post cards, preparing special meals, decorating a tree and visiting loved ones.

Let's meet other members and enjoy real Japanese food! Of course, let's speak Japanese, discuss Japanese culture, and talk about anything! This is very casual, so you don't have to be able to speak Japanese. Everybody is welcome to come, and there is nothing to worry about. Some members are really into practicing Japanese, and if you only want to speak Japanese, you can sit close to native Japanese speakers there. (Also, I'm sure the head of the organizers Hiroshi will have some meetups which you can only speak Japanese.)
Itto Sushi Restaurant is one of the best Japanese restaurants I know. It's a real Japanese restaurant. I mean, most of the people who work there are Japanese. It's pretty reasonable, and they have great food. You can get more info and see their here. http://www.ittosushi....
Access: They have free parking valet, so you can drive there. Also, it's close to L (Fullerton or Diversey), so you can walk a couple of blocks from those stations.
I look forward to seeing you all!

The implication was that a white man and an Asian woman make the most common and socially acceptable interracial pairing. Fetish, a new play by Joyce Wu, depicts a couple about to get married, who must contend with how much race and ethnicity still matter to them in an era after political correctness.

This talk presents recent analyses of satellite observations of NO2 over China and applications of these data to improving our understanding of emissions of NOx from China.
A case study will be included in which a satellite instrument was found to detect in near-real-time an abrupt, temporary drop in NOx levels over Beijing resulting from traffic restrictions during the Sino-Africa Summit in November, 2006. This was a test run of the sort of measures that would be employed during the Beijing Olympics, with another such natural policy experiment conducted in August of 2007.
Geared for an interdisciplinary audience, the talk will begin with an overview of recent research carried out by atmospheric scientists of the Harvard China Project. The seminar will start promptly at 4 PM.

Wariki, a quartet with Akira Katogi (taiko / dance), Shunsuke Kimura (yokobue / shamisen), Etsuro Ono (shamisen / taiko), and Shingo Ikegami (koto), breathe new life into the traditional folk arts of Japan. Their performance is strongly based in the exuberant Japanese folk tradition, combining both music and dance. The Goto & Obama Duo consists of Yukihiro Goto on biwa and Akihito Obama on shakuhachi. Each group is extending the vocabulary of these traditional forms to reach new generations of music fans.

CASI was recently launched in support of research, teaching, and community partnerships in Chinese American Studies.
Community co-sponsors include the Asian Pacific Alumni of UCLA, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California, and OCA Greater Los Angeles. The UCLA Association of Chinese Americans is also a co-sponsor.
Written, directed, and produced by Elaine Mae Woo, "Anna May Wong ~ Frosted Yellow Willows: Her Life, Times and Legend" is based on exclusive interviews with members of Anna's family, childhood friends, fellow artists, and colleagues as well as rare film footage secured from film archives, institutions, and libraries in the United States and Europe. Those interested in Hollywood history will find particular appeal in this biographical film documentary which contains seldom-seen footage from some of her European films.
Anna May Wong was the first Asian American actress whose stardom became internationally recognized during the Golden Age of Hollywood's silent film era and in the 'new' Hollywood era of sound to follow. With disarming sensuality and commanding presence, Anna May Wong defined the role of the "Dragon Lady." From humble beginnings in a Chinese laundry, she went on to star in pictures such as Technicolor's "Toll of the Sea" (1922), Douglas Fairbanks' "The Thief of Bagdad" (1924), E.A. Dupont's "Piccadilly" (1929) and Josef von Sternberg's "Shanghai Express" (1932) with Marlene Dietrich. While credited with having acted in over eighty films, Anna was rarely given roles deserving of her talents.
This biographical documentary is narrated by award-winning and internationally acclaimed Asian American actor, Nancy Kwan, who made her acting debut in "The World of Suzie Wong" (1960) for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress category by the Hollywood Foreign Press. It was followed by a memorable performance in the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Flower Drum Song" (1961), the first major western film with an all-Asian cast. Ms. Kwan will be honored at this U.S. premiere for her unparalleled accomplishments as a leading icon in Asian American media and film, as well as for her pioneering work advancing the presence of Asian Americans in Hollywood.
Seating and Reservations: The event is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required. To RSVP or inquire further, please call (310) 825-2974, or send E-MAIL at: aascrsvp@aasc.ucla.edu by January 11, 2008. Following the screening will be a panel discussion to include Nancy Kwan, film director Elaine Mae Woo, members of the production team, and other special guests. The Word Bank calls it the Bangladesh Paradox. The Bangladesh economy has steadily accelerated in recent years, with growth reaching 7% in 2006. The country scores particularly well on socio-economic indicators. Global banks and multilateral institutions present a highly optimistic outlook: Citi, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Merrill Lynch have identified Bangladesh as a key investment opportunity. This impressive growth occurs in a climate of political restructuring. A caretaker government is implementing reforms toward privatizing many state-owned enterprises. The Dhaka Stock Exchange Index is at a 10-year high, up 66 percent this year, making it Asia's top performer after China. And the stock market is expected to double in size in 2008.
Discover why market-oriented reforms, strong socio-economic indicators and highly favorable demographics are poised to render Bangladesh one of the world’s most exciting investment opportunities.

This exhibition of ceramics, metalworks, sculpture, and painting demonstrates that a depth of information can be revealed through the careful observation and study of the form of an object. The first of the show's three sections includes objects made for ritual and religious functions, featuring elegantly formed Chinese bronzes and porcelains, stately Chinese and Japanese sculptures of tomb guardians, and Japanese Buddhist paintings and sculptures. Objects of daily use, particularly ceramic vessels produced for drinking and eating, make up the second group. The final section consists of decorative objects ranging from a jade sculpture of the mythical Chinese beast known as a bixie to paintings mounted as hanging scrolls, albums, and screens. Approximately 90 works from the permanent collection, a number of which have rarely been displayed, have been selected for this exhibition.
