Undesirable Elements is an exploration of the Asian-American experience in New York through an interview-based theater work. The cast consists of six Asian-American artists, writers, and activists from diverse geographic backgrounds (South Asia, Pacific Islands, Central Asia, East Asia), each sharing their own real-life experiences. It's not a traditional play or documentary-theater project performed by actors. Instead, Undesirable Elements is presented as a chamber piece of story-telling, a "seated opera for the spoken word.'
Undesirable Elements is part of an ongoing series (over 30 productions since 1992) of community-specific oral history theater works exploring issues of race, culture, and identity in the lives of individuals living in different American cities. Each production is made with a local community partner and addresses relevant issues and topics facing that community. The process includes an intensive interview and rehearsal period with participants. The script is based on the interviews, and performed by the interviewees, who are not professional performers. The text moves chronologically, weaving together their personal and political narratives. The production addresses the recent history of the 20th and 21st centuries and the collisions of peoples and cultures in the modern world.
Presented as part of the first National Asian American Theater Festival. For more info on NAATF, visit http://www.naatf.org

Business Roundtable with Dae Ryun Chang (Dean, Graduate School of International Studies; Yonsei University) on Thursday, June 7, 2007
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM ♦ Registration and Reception 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM ♦ Luncheon and Presentation
Which phrasing of McDonald’s classic slogan would Korean consumers respond to: “you deserve a break today” or “we deserve a break today”? Professor Dae Ryun Chang of Yonsei University says that Korean consumers weigh countervailing tendencies towards individualism and collectivism when they consider their purchases. He calls this phenomenon the “we/me” paradigm and thinks that anyone doing business in Korea should understand it.
At this talk, Chang will discuss the paradigm, its underlying causes and its strategic marketing implications.
Dae Ryun Chang is a professor of marketing and dean of the Graduate School of International Studies at Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. He received his Ph.D. in business from Harvard University, and his MBA from Columbia University. He has held visiting teaching positions at the Helsinki School of Economics and Business, Australian National University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Singapore Management University. Chang has published numerous journal articles in outlets such as the Journal of Marketing, Management Science and Decision Sciences. He currently sits on the board of directors at LG Fashion and Boryung Medience.

Panelists: - Christopher Whitney, Executive Director of Studies, The Chicago Council on Global Affairs - Adam Segal, Maurice R. Greenberg Senior Fellow for China Studies, Council on Foreign Relations
When historians look back on this period of history, certainly one of the most profound developments will be the tectonic shift arising from the rise of the China and the relative redistribution of power compared to the United States. How people around the world view the prospects for this change will have significant impact on the decisions countries make going forward. Do people around the world think that China will catch up with the United States economically? If so, when? Do they see this as something positive or negative? How much confidence do people have in China to act responsibly as compared to the U.S.? How is China viewed in comparison to Japan? How do Asians feel about US military bases in Asia? How do publics feel about trade with China as compared to the US, Japan and other countries?
Building on the 2006 release of the Asia Society/Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA) groundbreaking public opinion survey "The United States and the Rise of India and China," CCGA and WorldPublicOpinion.org, in conjunction with research centers around the world, have extended the earlier research on public opinion conducted in the United States, China, and India, to include a total of 18 countries plus the Palestinian territories.

China's meteoric growth rate has intensified U.S. interest in East Asia. The potential for profit and prosperity in Asia for the U.S. and its trade partners makes this arena a hot spot for investment, as well an economic priority for the U.S. However, many risks lie beneath the surface, originating from regional political tensions and between China and the U.S. Japan, the second largest economy in the world and Asia's most politically stable nation, must seize the leadership initiative in the region and create a more inviting environment for risk-averse U.S. businesses. Can Japan live up to this role and aid in establishing a stable economic zone in East Asia? Furthermore how can the U.S., Japan and China strengthen their trilateral relationship? This symposium explores the current status and future prospects for East Asia's economies and implications for U.S. business strategy.

Topic: The Art of Chinese Theatre: When Tradition Meets Evolution, by Kuang-Yu Fong (Chinese Theatre Works)
Ms. Fong will share her story of why she chose to perform Chinese theater in the United States. The mission of her company, Chinese Theatre Works, is to "preserve and promote classic Chinese theater through performance, research and teaching; and to create new works that fuse Chinese theatrical aesthetics with contemporary western performance methods and social concerns." This statement indicates Ms. Fong’s two major artistic concerns, which are to hold onto and nurture tradition while allowing for its growth and evolution in the new social environment of the United States. Ms. Fong will illustrate this with examples from some of CTW' projects from the last decade, and will also talk some about the process and difficulties of creating this kind of theatre with a small, non-profit company.
Kuang-Yu Fong majored in Chinese Opera at the Chinese Cultural University in Taiwan. In 1983 she moved to the United States, where she received her MA in Educational Theater at New York University. She travelled all over the United States and to Belgium, Germany, Greece, Holland, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and China. In 1990 Ms. Fong founded Chinese Theatre Workshop (CTW). She has also been the artistic director of the Gold Mountain Institute for Traditional Shadow Theatre (GMI) since 1998. In 2001, the two companies, GMI and CTW merged to form a new organization, Chinese Theatre Works, Inc. which Ms. Fong is executive director and co-artistic director.

The musical "Homeland" is part of our 29th OCA National Convention. It is first time ever that the Sacramento Chapter hosts the Convention.
Homeland explores the collision of race, religion and values in modern America. "It's a sweeping story of two star-crossed lovers—the daughter of Korean immigrants and a native son from West Texas—caught in the battle for the hearts and minds of red state/blue state America," San Francisco composer and lyricist L. Jay Kuo explains. "It's also the first Asian-American musical in a generation to tell our real stories. In an era when Tony-award winning musicals like Miss Saigon or Thoroughly Modern Millie continue to portray Asians as prostitutes and white slave traders, Homeland's Asian Americans are seen as an integral part of the national fabric."
Tickets are on sale now. Our web is ready to take orders. Please log on www.ocasacramento.org or www.homelandmusical.com to buy tickets. You can read professional reviews and listen to sample songs on the later website.
