Asian Students In Action
Asian Students In Action (A.S.I.A.) is a student-run organization at Boston Latin School. The club is a collaboration of the Asian Cultures Club, Southeast Asian Club, and the Japanese Club. Members participate in many events relating to service within the school and community - they have volunteered their services at the Boston Food Bank campaigns, the Chinatown Cleanup Project and at the local Chinese New Year celebrations. They have sponsored contests such as the 3rd Annual Christmas Sing-Off with other schools and organizations, and have invited guest speakers to make presentations on such topics as preparing for college and college life. A.S.I.A.also organizes the annual BLS Asian Night, an event famous for its cultural and ethnic expositions. Asian Night is one of the few student organized and student-run events that produces an audience of more than 900 people in a single day. It was featured and commended for its work and attitude by Positive Teen Magazine in 2001. A.S.I.A. hopes to inspire others to take on similar initiatives within their own communities and to continue to participate extensively in community service. We're students. We're young, enthusiastic, energetic, and we have a purpose. Our mission is to represent the true meaning of Asian Pride in serving our school, community, and others. ASIA provides a forum for students to let their opinions be heard and make the differences that they feel should be made, to learn from each other as well as socialize in a nurturing and positive environment. ASIA Members have the opportunity to develop skills outside of the classroom, outside of the books, in, but not limited to, skills in leadership, dedication and service to school and community, awareness of issues, and the general survival� skills needed at the Boston Latin School. Members are also provided resources and informed of events and programs outside of BLS that may be of interest. The ASIA Committee strives to uphold and exceed the principles of ASIA in advancing its mission, to provide our peers and our Members with as many opportunities and resources possible, socially and academically, and to leave our mark, in paving the way for and serving as mentors to the future leaders of ASIA.
