Arkipelago
Acknowledging the need for more collaborative work among the local Filipino (American and Philippine born) artists and their ethnic community in the United States, the concept of Arkipelago was created. The Tagalog translation of the word 'archipelago,' Arkipelago called to mind the inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago, many of whom have been displaced and isolated by the recent diaspora to other lands. Arkipelago grew out of what was initially a 'one-shot project' to commemorate Human Rights Day in December of 1993. It was a celebration of Filipino culture and heritage that consisted of 15 performing groups and individual artists. The event drew over 200 immigrant and American born Filipinos. Without the aid of financial grants or subsidies, Arkipelago's steering committee was determined to draw its support solely from the Filipino community. The one-night program became less of a performance but evolved into a gathering of a community eager to celebrate its ethnic heritage. By the end of the evening, the audience was on their feet dancing to the beat of gongs and indigenous Filipino music. The success of the initial project convinced Arkipelago's steering committee of the need for more activities that could draw the community together. The mission was clear: to help bridge gaps between the Philippine and American born, to forge new bonds, to continue the legacy of using art as a forum to expose, focus and comment on the Filipino experience in America. In the affirmation of our cultural identity, we draw empowerment and strength to join other ethnic communities and acknowledge similar experiences in surviving and living in America. The organization has come a long way from that one-night performance and has developed several on-going programs consistent its mission. Today, Arkipelago is a New York City based, volunteer-run, cultural organization. Through the arts, we continue to encourage critical dialogue and promote community involvement in issues that concern the Filipinos worldwide.
