The Princeton Prize in Race Relations

There is perhaps no greater challenge facing our country than increasing understanding and cooperation among people of different racial backgrounds. It is a challenge that every new generation encounters. We therefore believe that young people have a particularly important role to play, and hope, through the Princeton Prize, to recognize and encourage young people who have made or are making efforts to improve racial harmony.

In order to recognize, support, and encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of relations among the races, Princeton University is sponsoring an awards program for high school students—the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Applications postmarked by January 31, 2008, will be eligible for prizes—including cash awards up to $1,000 for particularly noteworthy work—that will be presented in the spring of 2008.

MOMS is a NIH/NINR (1R01NR008926-01A1) funded study entitled "A Multiethnic Internet Study On Menopausal Symptoms"

Increasing ethnic diversity of the U.S. population requires health professionals to practice with greater cultural competence in areas such as the management of menopausal symptoms, where cultural beliefs mediate the biology of reproduction and aging. A growing number of studies have challenged the universality of menopausal symptoms by indicating significant ethnic differences in how women experience them. However, few investigators have studied ethnic populations in the U.S., and few studies have been national in scope. With advances in computer technologies, the Internet now provides an excellent medium of national and international communication and allows people in different geographical areas to communicate and exchange their experiences and opinions. This study uses innovative Internet data collection methods to collect national data and essential information about specific ethnic differences in menopausal symptom experience while respecting women's own experiences.

Study Announcement

Eun-Ok Im, MPH, PhD, School of Nursing, University of Texas at Austin and her colleagues are conducting an Internet study on menopausal symptom experience among diverse ethnic groups of middle-aged women. In the study, Internet survey and online forums using a Web site (home-page) will be conducted to get information on women's symptom experience during the menopausal transition.

You are being asked to participate in this study if you are a middle aged woman aged 40 to 60 years who can read and write English and who are a White, Hispanic, African-American, or Asian Americans.

Data will be collected from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2008. Methods for the data collection include an Internet survey among 500 middle aged women in the U.S. on the Internet and online forum discussions among four ethnically different online forum groups (30 members per group at the beginning).

Your involvement will be: (a) about 30 minutes are usually needed to complete the Internet survey questionnaire; and (b) online forums will be conducted for 6 months (6 months for 7 discussion topics and additional topics that the participants may add) if you agree to participate in the additional online forum discussions. Your participation is asynchronous (participants can visit the online forum site and read and post messages at their convenience).

Reimbursement for participation will be made by providing a Target gift certificate of 10 dollars per Internet survey participant and a Target gift certificate of 50 dollars per online forum participant. To get reimbursed for the online forums, at least two messages per topic should be posted. For more information, please visit at our Web-site (http://buda.nur.utexas.edu/MOMS/) and/or contact us.

Dear Friend,

Asian American/Asian Research Institute (AAARI) is cooking up a delectable plan and invites you to help stir up the pot. Every culture has a history of unique dishes that has been passed down from generation to generation, some of which may have been infused with new and diverse twists as they travel from country to country. AAARI would like to bring all those histories, influences, and cultures together into the "Awesome Asian American Recipe Ideas" cookbook. The AAARI cookbook will serve as an important component towards achieving our annual fundraising goal. As part of the CUNY community, we invite you to be an integral part of this AAARI initiative and help make the "Awesome Asian American Recipe Ideas" cookbook a reality.

Dig out that old family recipe; interview your spouse, grandparent, or child; or concoct a new recipe of your own. We need you to submit a recipe for a fantastic dish which your AAARI family and friends will be sure to enjoy! Dishes could be Asian American, Asian, pan-Asian, or any other cuisine which you and your family love cooking and enjoy eating! Along with the recipe, please tell us the story behind the dish. For example, what make this dish special to you, was it passed down from generation to generation, or what inspired you to invent this dish. Send in a recipe, story (about 180 words), and photo of the dish using the attached donation form by Monday, August 6, 2007, to insure inclusion with this edition.

For guidelines and submission form, please visit our website @ www.aaari.info/cookbook.htm

Thank you for your contribution and continued support!

Sincerely,

Antony Wong, Office Manager

Looking for Serious Entrepreneurs

The Chinese Software Professionals Association (CSPA) is putting together another one of our popular Angel Pitch events for the July/August timeframe. Our past Angel Pitch events ( http://www.cspa.com/eventdetail.php?eid=20060725, http://www.cspa.com/eventdetail.php?eid=20051205 ) have resulted in strong investor interests in some of the companies that pitched. As in past such events, we will put together a panel of high-level angel/early stage investors, and we are looking for 3 serious and quality entrepreneurs, who would like to pitch their ideas in front of this panel for critiques, feedback, and maybe more.

If you are a serious entrepreneur interested in participating (whether Asian or non-Asian....we only care that you have a good business idea), please send a brief executive summary of your business plan, some description of where you are in the process of building your business, and a description of your own background to angelpitch@cspa.com. We will provide presentation coaching, and access to investors, but please note that you will pitch in front of an audience.
