Korean American Women In Need (KAN-WIN)
History and Mission In the late 1980s, women's advocates and social service providers came together in response to the growing demand for services in the Korean American community. Women seeking assistance were knocking at the doors of their local community centers in the middle of the night. Out of these discussions came the formation of KAN-WIN. KAN-WIN was officially established on August 15, 1990 with the mission of freedom from violence. Towards this mission, KAN-WIN has five primary goals:
KAN-WIN is the first independent organization in the nation established solely to address violence against women and children in the Korean American community. We remain the only comprehensive domestic violence agency for Korean Americans in the Midwest. Current Programs Direct Services - KAN-WIN services are provided within a comprehensive case management approach and are bilingual & bicultural. They include:
Community Education - KAN-WIN seeks to educate and outreach to the Korean American and wider community about violence as an accepted form of social behavior. In challenging societal and cultural norms, the organization seeks to provide information about alternatives to violence towards longterm prevention. Activities include:
