History and Mission
In the late 1980s, women's advocates and social service providers came together in response to the growing demand for services in the Korean American community. Women seeking assistance were knocking at the doors of their local community centers in the middle of the night. Out of these discussions came the formation of KAN-WIN.

KAN-WIN was officially established on August 15, 1990 with the mission of freedom from violence. Towards this mission, KAN-WIN has five primary goals:

  • Provide comprehensive services to domestic violence and sexual assault victims;
  • Empower women to make informed decisions about ending violence in their lives;
  • Educate and outreach to the community towards violence prevention;
  • Engage in systems advocacy towards the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services for ethnic minority and immigrant communites; and
  • Facilitate leadership of Korean American women in ending domestic violence.

KAN-WIN is the first independent organization in the nation established solely to address violence against women and children in the Korean American community. We remain the only comprehensive domestic violence agency for Korean Americans in the Midwest.

Current Programs
Direct Services - KAN-WIN services are provided within a comprehensive case management approach and are bilingual & bicultural. They include:

  • Crisis intervention and counseling
  • Legal, medical and social service advocacy;
  • Support group for survivors and their children;
  • Emergency and short term shelter placement;
  • Transitional housing program; and
  • Children's Program.

Community Education - KAN-WIN seeks to educate and outreach to the Korean American and wider community about violence as an accepted form of social behavior. In challenging societal and cultural norms, the organization seeks to provide information about alternatives to violence towards longterm prevention. Activities include:

  • Public relations to enhance positive and informed media coverage;
  • Presentation to students, church congregations and the community-at-large;
  • Specialize Training to social service providers, police officers, and other professionals; and
  • 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training program for new KAN-WIN volunteers.
