Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS)
The Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) is a northern California 501(c )(3) nonprofit multicultural theater organization, nestled in the Sierra foothills of Nevada City and Grass Valley in western Nevada County.CATS is dedicated to promoting and celebrating cultural diversity by educating and enriching the community through quality multicultural theatrical productions, events, and workshops. CATS is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. Its Board members and administrative personnel are volunteers. CATS is a pioneer among art organizations in this area in promoting cultural diversity through education and entertainment. In a community of approximately 13,000, where 92% of its residents are White, CATS has, since its inception in 1994, been instrumental in enriching the cultural climate of these Gold Rush towns. CATS has filled a void in this arts community. Its theatrical productions have dealt with the rich Asian influence on American history. The themes have included, among others, the Chinese contribution to the California Gold Rush, the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, explorations into the "human elements" of World War II and the aftermath, an inquiry into the perceptions of truth, and an examination of intergenerational relationshipsl.� Our productions have been well received by the both the education community and the community at large.
