Asian Professional Extension, Inc. (APEX)
The Asian Professional Extension, Inc. (APEX) seeks to promote the personal and educational development of Asian American youth by providing Asian American adult role models. It was founded in 1992 by five Asian professionals wanting to address the growing needs and concerns of Asian American youth. APEX is dedicated to helping underprivileged, inner-city Asian American youth overcome the multiple challenges they face as adolescents, as multilingual and multicultural individuals. Through one-to-one relationships with caring volunteers, youth are able to explore new career options, receive guidance and support in navigating the education system, and improve their self-esteem and confidence. APEX aims to foster the skills that girls and boys need to become healthy adults. Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of Asian American students in New York City. Despite the "model minority" myth, Asian American youth struggle with the challenges of assimilating and acculturating, with limited help and resources. In fact, 1 out of 3 Asian American high school students do not graduate or graduate on time in New York City (Board of Education, 1996). APEX serves mainly low-income Asian American youth in New York City. Our volunteers are Asian American professionals in various fields, including business, consulting, law, medicine, media, and the arts. APEX currently has an active membership of over 300 has served over 800 youth. Read the AIA Spotlight article on APEX Sunny Kim - Executive Director Susie Lee - Program Director < back to listings |
