Asian American Arts Alliance
Asian American Arts Alliance was founded in 1983 by a group of artists, activists, and community leaders to raise public awareness of Asian American arts. In the early years we focused on producing an annual arts festival, Roots to Reality, and publishing a monthly events calendar. Later, significant accomplishments included sponsoring the first Asian American arts conference in New York City, Defining Our Culture(s), Ourselves, at Hunter College in 1991; and organizing the first national Asian American arts conference, Beyond Boundaries, (in collaboration with the Association of Performing Arts Presenters) in 1993. Over the years, the Arts Alliance has broadened its scope as New York City's Asian American population has grown in size and ethnic diversity. Today, we provide a centralized information network, vital resources and advocacy services, and ongoing technical assistance to Asian American artists and organizations. Programs include print and on-line resource directories and event calendars; Dialogue, the only magazine devoted to the work of multi-disciplinary, multi-ethnic Asian American artists; a grants program for small NYC based organizations; and Spotlight, free public events featuring artists & hot topics. Through these years of change and growth, our mission has remained the same: to increase the support, recognition, and appreciation of Asian American arts. Through all of our work, we seek to increase understanding of the enormous diversity of cultures, histories, and voices that exist within the pan-ethnic Asian American community.
